Subject: Define Faith. |
Bible Note: CDBJ, good insightful post! There are indeed different gradations of faith and different objects of faith. There is a pervasive teaching in Christendom today that says in so many words "have faith, just have faith." The implication is that all one must do to accomplish the impossible is simply to have faith in faith. If I am ill and want to get well, is really all that is necessary for me to do is to have faith that I will become whole again? When I go in my car from my home to the shopping mall, will faith that I won't become involved in a traffic accident prevent me from having an accident? It was never the faith in faith alone that cured the lame or restored sight to the blind who came to Jesus for help. It was their faith in Jesus that led to their restoration, and it was Jesus who effected it. We are saved by grace through faith, but not through faith in faith; it is through faith in the only one who is able to save, Jesus Christ. It is possible to say, of course, "Oh, I have lots of faith. I have faith that I will go to heaven." It is certain, however, if that is all there is to my faith, that I'm most definitely going in the other direction. --Hank |
