Subject: Women starting churches....???? |
Bible Note: The Lord is not divided, how can He say in the Bible that He does not permit a woman to have authority over man, and then do as you think, place women in leadership in churches? We seem to agree about the clear statement regarding the creation order, but I'm feeling like you bristle against it by calling it "pecking order". Concerning Jer 31:22 You must say what you mean by citing it. I'll go to work now to give you an expostion of it, I trust you'll appreciate the effort. This is the middle in the long context of a renewal of the covenant. Opening with great sorrow, (v.15-17) Jeremiah makes appeal to God to save Isreal, have mercy on them. The context began to cite Rachel weeping for her children then the text is discussing shame v.19 and builds to ask: "How long will you gad about, O you backsliding daughter? ...new thing woman encompass a man.. the idea of backsliding in the verse (22) gives us real help to interpret it. Such help is useful because the meaning of encompass is unclear in the Hebrew. So we can tell that the phrase "encompass a man" belongs to the context of sin being discussed. Remember there were "new things" being articulated here which are clear issues of the covenant renewal. Using this verse as an example of the Bible teaching that women can start churches is not what the author nor the Author intended. I have many many commentaries and none of them use this verse for your intention. |
