Bible Question: Emmaus: I can appreciate the quote "what divides us is inaccurate doctrine." Just having finished a semester of studying the Reformation period, I understand this in spades. But the age old question, which the Reformers argued over was, who determines what is 'accurate' or 'inaccurate' doctrine? For some it was the Fathers of the Church, for others it was tradition, for others it was the interpretation of the words "This IS my body" and what "IS" meant. I would appreciate yours, Reformer Joe's, Hank's, Justme's, and others comments on how one determines "inaccurate doctrine." I do not want to foster an argument but am sincere in asking. It was distressing to read about all the martyrdom during the Reformation period and the treatise's that went back and forth over doctrinal issues. I continue to be distressed over how the Body of Christ argues over seemingly small issues. Thanks in advance to all who respond. For His Glory, Beensetfree |
Bible Answer: Beensetfree, You are not alone in your distress. I, as you may surmise from looking at my profile, subscibe to the doctrine of one authoritative teaching Church with apostolic succession of bishops, which authoritatively interprets Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. I believe the Church is the "pillar and foundation of truth," (1 Timothy 3:15) which is "lead to all truth" by the Holy Spirit (John 16:13) and against which "the gates of hell shall not prevail." (Matt 16:18) Emmaus |
