Subject: Whence Unity? |
Bible Note: Unity is not an action. Unity is not an idea. Unity is not achieved by choosing to ignore differences. Unity is not a matter of tolerance. Unity never grows out of human effort. Any such unity is inadequate, flawed, and temporary at best. Christianity is not a religion of tolerance. If you have one idea of God and I have another idea of God, we cannot be united. If you preach one gospel and I preach another gospel, we cannot be united. If you affirm a doctrine and I deny that doctrine, one or both of us is wrong, and we cannot be united. (Although Christianity is intolerant, it is definitely not belligerent or combative. We do not blow up buildings because there are differences of belief. It is to our shame that men ever thought they could bring the gospel by way of the sword.) Unity only comes as an act of God, and through the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ as taught by Jesus, the prophets of the OT, and the apostles of the NT. Note that isn't the lives of the prophets and apostles, nor their authority, but the very Person of Jesus Christ. (No wonder Paul said so frequently that he purposed to know nothing but Christ, and Him crucified.) Unity only comes from this act of our God. As believers, we were both utterly lost without Christ. Our sin was equally black. We were equally dead and without God before He acted. Now God breaks down the dividing walls between us and between God and us. We are both saved by grace alone through the shed (not spilled) blood of Jesus Christ. (This was the gist of my pastor's sermon today.) Praise the Lord that the foundation on which this new habitation for our God is so secure and so eternal. |
