Bible Question: This question has to do with adoption. In the natural world in which we live, a couple may adopt a child without the child's consent. Is this also true of an unbeliever into the Kingdom of God? The unbeliever have nothing to say about his adoption. God's adoption of persons to become "heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ" is because of his love for the sinner. John 1:12 states that adopted status belongs to all who receive Christ. The adoption status cannot happen until the person is first justified. Galatians 3:26 "For you are all sons of God throught faith in Christ Jesus." Now there is adoption and regeneration. Adoption results in a new relationship with Christ, while regeneration is a change of our moral nature. When we are justified, adopted, regenerated, we are to take on His character, nature, and Holiness, and act accordingly. |
Bible Answer: Oops...sorry...misread your post! Here is how the Westminster Shorter Catechism interprets Scripture: Q. 31. What is effectual calling? A. Effectual calling is the work of God’s Spirit, whereby, convincing us of our sin and misery, enlightening our minds in the knowledge of Christ, and renewing our wills, he doth persuade and enable us to embrace Jesus Christ, freely offered to us in the gospel. Q. 32. What benefits do they that are effectually called partake of in this life? A. They that are effectually called do in this life partake of justification, adoption, and sanctification, and the several benefits which in this life do either accompany or flow from them. Q. 34. What is adoption? A. Adoption is an act of God’s free grace,a whereby we are received into the number, and have a right to all the privileges, of the sons of God. Effectual calling is God persuading us and enabling us to embrace Christ. One of the results of us being called is adoption. --Joe! |
