Bible Note: Hank Happy New Year to you! I have read Spurgeon’s sermon many times and truly he is the Prince of the Pulpit. He does an excellent job in exegesis of this scripture. I find no cause to disagree except with his explanation of the "if". The thrust of Spurgeon’s argument is, human nature knowing the consequence of rejecting Christ rules out the "if" from ever happening. That is simply not the case, today we see many people facing an end of imminent and total destruction, and having a total certainty of that destruction march headlong into it. As I have said, you can’t lose your salvation but you certainly can lay it down and walk away from it. This scripture cited here clearly states if you do there is no coming back and picking it back up again. I can find nothing in scripture anywhere that makes the ‘if’ used in this scripture an impossibility. EdB |
