Subject: sheila, why pray for a lesser gift? |
Bible Note: Greetings Searcher! I know that Dr. MacArthur has advocated this view in the past. He has argued that 'tongues' refers to the geninue gift, while 'tongue' refers to the false gift. With that in mind, why does Paul say in 1 Cor. 14:27? "If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret." According to Dr. MacArthur's view, is Paul saying that it is okay to use the false gift in church? Or, according to your view, is Paul just mocking them in this verse? I have written a longer post on this point in the past, but the short version is this. The best way to view the differences in number is that one speaks 'languages' in general, but a 'language' in particular. In the same way, Paul speaks of 'tongues' in general, but one only speaks one 'tongue' at a time. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
