Subject: sheila, why pray for a lesser gift? |
Bible Note: Greetings Searcher! My dear friend, one must also remember that many Christians of good conscience share a different view on tongues than you do. For instance, I do not share your view that tongues were always an understood language by the audience. For instance, 1 Cor. 14:2 clearly states that men do not understand. Nor do I share your view that tongues is a 'lesser' gift. Paul undoubtedly was correcting the abuse of this gift in worship. But, you was not making the point that tongues was 'less' than other gifts. Tongues is not the only gift mentioned at the end of chapter 12. Apostles, prophets, teachers, miracles, healings, and tongues are mentioned, then Pauls commands that they earnestly desire the greatest gifts. I don't see this as an indication that 'tongues' is least, but that all the gifts are needed. In fact, Paul specifically lists 'tongues' as one part of orderly worship in chapter 14. Further, he commands us not to forbid anyone from speaking in tongues. Having said this my friend, there is undoubtedly many errors concerning this teaching. Few follow Paul's instructions regarding interpretation and limited number of tongues in a service! :-) Few heed his words that not all speak in tongues! But, let's not throw the baby out with the bathwater! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
