AMPLIFIED 2015 | 2 Corinthians 13:5 ¶ Test and evaluate yourselves to see whether you are in the faith and living your lives as [committed] believers. Examine yourselves [not me]! Or do you not recognize this about yourselves [by an ongoing experience] that Jesus Christ is in you--unless indeed you fail the test and are rejected as counterfeit? |
Bible Question:
AMENDED QUESTION: *According to the Scriptures*, what kind of things do and do not prove the genuineness of saving faith? I have so far received many, many good, thoughtful replies to the original question. After posting it, I later amended the original question to phrase it more accurately and more specifically. I repost the amended question here in hopes that people will notice what I was really getting at. |
Bible Answer: JVH0212 ... The context of the passage (12:11-13:10), Paul was displeased with some of the sin. He makes a list in 12:30. Brent pointed out the passages in 1 John how (habitual) sin is proof that we are not saved. I think that there is no struggle, we not not saved (Rom. 7:14). Paul also is not happy that they are demanding proof that Christ was speaking through him. 1 Cor 5:4 may relate. It may be that since Paul spoke against what they had done and were doing ... they were not ready to confess their sins, but, to question Paul's authority. They wanted to know if Christ was in him, not caring that He may not be in them ... log eye (Matt. 7:1-5). Jam. 2:14ff shows us that works is proof of faith, it is not part of salvation (Eph 2:8-9), but is proof (vs. 10). Heb 11:1-2 defines faith ... being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. The rest of the chapter is an example of some of our hero's faith. This is an excellent question, I will study it more. I hope I answer |
