Subject: Faith and Works: Paul vs. James |
Bible Note: It might be beneficial to note that Paul is speaking of justification. What James is describing, using the word justification, is sanctification, being made holy, walking even as Christ walked (1 John 2:6). A simple comparison works like this: I can say I'm a Christian all day long. But talk is one thing, and we are called to walk the walk. If I say I am a Christian but to not have the mind of Christ (See Philippians 2:5ff), and would rather do nothing at all except say that I am a Christian, then I prove the contrary and God's name is blasphemed because of me, I bring reproach upon the holy name of Christ. Peter says, "make your calling and election sure (2 Peter 1:3) and this is what James is teaching...be doers of the word not hearers only. We are a royal priesthood (1 Pet. 2:9). For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. cf. 2 Tim. 1:9 (Eph. 2:10). See also 1 Tim. 5:25; 6:18 |
