NASB | Romans 3:31 ¶ Do we then nullify the Law through faith? May it never be! On the contrary, we establish the Law. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Romans 3:31 ¶ Do we then nullify the Law by this faith [making the Law of no effect, overthrowing it]? Certainly not! On the contrary, we confirm and establish and uphold the Law [since it convicts us all of sin, pointing to the need for salvation]. |
Bible Question: Since we are justified by faith without the works of the law, (Rom 3:28 For we maintain that a man is justified by faith apart from works of the Law), then in what sense is the law established in this Rom 3:31? |
Bible Answer: "through faith...we establish the law" 'Romans 3:31 through faith...we establish the law (NKJV). Salvation by grace through faith does not denigrate the law, but underscores its true importance: '1) by providing a payment for the penalty of death, which the law required for failing to keep it; '2) by fulfilling the law's original purpose, which is to serve as a tutor to show mankind's utter inability to obey God's righteous demands and to drive people to Christ (Gal. 3:24); and '3) by giving believers the capacity to obey it (Romans 8:3,4).' (The MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997) [Note that salvation by grace through faith does NOT give believers the right to IGNORE or BREAK the law. Rather, it gives us the capacity to OBEY it.] |
