Bible Question: Why is Paul eager to preach the gospel to those to whom he is writing, since they are already believers whose faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world (v 8)? |
Bible Answer: PJG, It would seem that the answer to your question is first of all in verse 12. It also seems that Paul wants to win over any in thr Roman Christian community that may still hold to the position of the Judaisers that he seesm to be addressing in large portions of this letter as it progresses. A nother reason for wanting to preach is Rome is that the Christian community is still samll and there are many more to be converted. The "believers whose faith is being proclaimed throughout the whole world" would seem to mean among the Christian communities throughout the Roman world. Paul was certainly ambitious for the Gospel. To capture the Capitol of the Empire for Christ by winning the hearts of its inhabitants for Christ would have a dramatic impact on the spread of the Gospel throughout the Empire. Rom 1:10 always in my prayers making request, if perhaps now at last by the will of God I may succeed in coming to you. Rom 1:11 For I long to see you so that I may impart some spiritual gift to you, that you may be established; Rom 1:12 that is, that I may be encouraged together with you while among you, each of us by the other's faith, both yours and mine. Rom 1:13 I do not want you to be unaware, brethren, that often I have planned to come to you (and have been prevented so far) so that I may obtain some fruit among you also, even as among the rest of the Gentiles. Rom 1:14 I am under obligation both to Greeks and to barbarians, both to the wise and to the foolish. Rom 1:15 So, for my part, I am eager to preach the gospel to you also who are in Rome. Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Rom 1:17 For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, "BUT THE RIGHTEOUS man SHALL LIVE BY FAITH." Emmaus |
