Subject: Tongues mean Holy Spirit? |
Bible Note: Hi Chris, What you've written has helped me confirm my understanding of the Holy Spirit baptism and speaking in tongues. I was frustrated on the behalf of new converts because when they accept Christ as Savior, they are told that they will need the baptism of the Holy Spirit and that they have to "tarry" for Him to come and dwell within (they told me the same thing when I first received Christ and I almost quit because when I didn't speak in tongues, they said I didn't have the Holy Spirit. I felt like God didn't want me!). I disagree. I believe, as you helped me understand also, that you receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit when you ask Christ into your life and accept Him as your Savior. I believe that speaking in tongues come as a result of the anointing of God. Also, I believe, as you have, in the gift of tongues. When I'm praising and worshipping God, sometimes I speak in tongues, but I have no control of it, so I don't have the gift. I only speak in tongues when His anointing comes over me. What do you think about that? Also, can you give me some advice on how to understand and view "holy dancing?" To me, it looks like a bunch of people acting like idiots and babbling in an unknown language, but then, without my control, I start acting like that. What is going on?? It's like I get so happy to have God as my Father, my King, my everything (I wasn't trying to rhyme, really) that I have to dance! Is that what King David was experiencing when the Ark of the Covenant was returned to Jerusalem? Sorry for all of these questions, but you seem to know a lot about the Holy Spirit. Thanks again.
