Bible Note: Dear WTB, The struggle today is that so many churches like your own do not really believe in the authority of Scripture alone (sola Scriptura), whether they realize it or not. Sometimes they are simply not taught, other times they've been the victims of false teaching. The Word of God is our sole authority -- fully sufficient, infallible, and necessary (2 Timothy 3:15-17; Isaiah 8:20; Luke 16:29, 31; Ephesians 2:20; Romans 1:19-21; Romans 2:14-15; Psalms 19:1-3; Hebrews 1:1; Proverbs 22:19-21; Romans 15:4; 2 Peter 1:19-20). The fact of the matter is that one can't derive a doctrine of a "second blessing" from the full teaching of the Word of God. I rather doubt, therefore, that those with whom you are dealing will ultimately appeal to the Scriptures. In the final analysis, they will probably appeal to experience, as I've no doubt you've already noticed. Of course, all that written, we need to deal with "the gifts" in a way that accepts the complete teaching of the Bible. Every believer should earnestly desire and persistently pray for the special gifting of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 12:31; 14:1). At the same time, we all need to be extremely cautious, for we know that not every kind of gifting is valid (Deuteronomy 18:20-22; Acts 19:13-16; 1 John 4:1). Not every use of spiritual gifting is appropriate (1 Corinthians 13:1-3; 14:6-19, 27-31). Nevertheless, we have to be careful that we don't overreact by "throwing the baby out with the bath water." There are many legitimate ways in which the Spirit works in the lives and gifts believers (Ephesians 4:30; 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). The gift of the Holy Spirit is an initial taste of what our future in Christ will be like (Ephesians 1:13-14). True believers have a deep longing to daily experience the work of the Holy Spirit in their lives (Galatians 5:22-25). And the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but kind to everyone, able to teach, patiently enduring evil, correcting his opponents with gentleness. God may perhaps grant them repentance leading to a knowledge of the truth, and they may escape from the snare of the devil, after being captured by him to do his will. (2 Timothy 2:24-26 ESV) God bless you as you seek sound doctrine, and as you seek to teach it. In Him, Doc |
