Bible Note: Hi Mommapbs, The pattern that I saw was concerning the (Light) of the world spoken of in John 8:32, John 9:5, and the (Light) of men in John 1:4. The pattern of Light of life and Bread of life which you find lacking is a good point. I am not totally against the way the NASB95 interprets John 8:12, but I was considering with you the introduction of the Life. I will therefore keep "Light of life" penciled in my personal copy. I have 72 posts concerning the "Bread" of life in the archives of this forum. 1) When looking at John 1:4 concerning "life", "life", and "light", I see the problem as one of relationship with the other. If the interpretation is "Light of men" then we should recognize Him as the "Life". The NASB95 does not have Life capitalized. 2) However, as one interested in counting the number of pronouns I would agree with the NASB95 in the number of pronouns capitalized. I would expect three pronouns of Deity for John 1:4,5. 3) The problem I see with the NASB95 for verse 5 is that the Light does not agree with "it". God is not an "it". The presence of light (lower case) would be an it to my mind. So I would offer two possibilities to anyone who might be interested in the interpretation of this passage with regard to capitalization. a) John 1:4, "In Him was life; and the Life was the (Light) of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it." b) John 1:4, "In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. 5 The Light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend (Him)."
