Bible Question:
John 5:28-29 "Do not marvel at this; for an hour is coming, in which all who are in the tombs will hear His voice, and will come forth; those who did the good deeds to a resurrection of life, those who committed the evil deeds to a resurrection of judgment." Many say Moses' Law will be used to judge those who died without hearing the Gospel. But Moses' Law was given only to Israelis. Even their contemporaries or enemies such as Canaanites, Egyptians, Babylonians, Persians, and Hittites never heard of the Law. So, it seems very unfair to judge them by the Law. My question is by what "fair" standards those who died without hearing Moses' Law before or after Jesus came to earth to preach the Gospel will be judged for their having done good or evil? |
Bible Answer: John 3:16-21 (NASB) 16 "For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. 17 "For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. 18 "He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 "This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. 20 "For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. 21 "But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God." People judged into damnation are so judged because they rejected the need for a Messiah. They tried to justify themselves through their life. Some realized early on that they couldn't measure up and instead of looking for Salvatiion apart from themselves just gave up and turn to the dark side (so to speak) others realized that in of themselves there was no salvation so they instead looked to a Messiah. The Law of Moses did two things gave people a standard of civilization but also it clearly pointed out their need for a Messiah. No one was capable of keeping every aspect of the law of Moses, so God gave them the sacrifice system that would atone for their sins but more importantly was foretelling of the perfect Lamb of God that would once and for all pay for their sins. Since Jesus death on the cross people are not judged by the sins they commit since we all sin and fall short of perfection. But instead they are judged by their rejection of Jesus. Before Jesus people are judged on whether they saw their righteousness in themselves or looked to a Messiah. |
