NASB | John 5:18 For this reason therefore the Jews were seeking all the more to kill Him, because He not only was breaking the Sabbath, but also was calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | John 5:18 This made the Jews more determined than ever to kill Him, for not only was He breaking the Sabbath [from their viewpoint], but He was also calling God His own Father, making Himself equal with God. |
Bible Question: I just returned from vacation and something puzzled me but I didn't want to ask them. My cousin is married to a Mormon and they (him and his father) said grace before meals and always ended the prayer "in Jesus Name we pray". I thought Jesus wasn't God pre se in their religion. I didn't want to start any contraversy then but does anybody know the answer, could they be Christian Mormons? Is this normal for Mormons? My cousin was raised Methodist, maybe this was a compromise. |
Bible Answer: Mormonism teaches Jesus became a god after his death and ascension. (Gospel Through the Ages, 1958, p 21) It also teaches man can become God. (Jour of Discourses, V 10, p 223; Hist of the Church, V 6, p 306; Doc and Covenants, 132.20). The BIBLE, however, teaches Jesus claimed to be God while here on earth (John 5:18; 10:30-33) - and man is NOT God, never has been, and never will be: "...before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me." "...I am God... there is none like me." (Isaiah 43:10; 46:9 Cp. Isaiah 44:8) Mormonism also teaches the blood Jesus "shed" in Gethsemane pays for most sin. (Church News, Oct 9, 1982, p 19) Personal sin was not covered by Jesus' blood. (Morm Doc, pp 62, 669; Third Article of Faith; Jour of Disc, V 3, p 247) The BIBLE, however, teaches Jesus blood on Calvary paid for sin. (1 Pet 2:24) - ALL of it. "...the blood of Jesus... cleanseth us from ALL sin." (1 John 1:7) |
