Subject: Do tongues relate to worship in context? |
Bible Note: Exactly where in the entire book of Jude does he address the subject of ecstatic speaking in tongues? It simply isn't there, and the only possible way to get "speaking in tongues" out of anything Jude said is by reading a meaning into it that is neither stated nor implied. Whether one chooses to call it twisting Scripture, misinterpretation of Scripture, or something else, the fact is that it is not sound exegesis of Scripture. My objective is not to prove you wrong and myself right. That should NEVER be the objective of a sincere student of the Bible. The objective should always be to ascertain the truth, to dig deeply and diligently for meaning. But we thwart our efforts and defeat the chances of real success in this endeavor when we approach a passage with a preconceived idea of what it means based on our individual doctrinal orientation. If one is determined to make Jude 20 a proof text for speaking ecstatic tongue speaking, and equally determined to ignore context, it is quite possible, I suppose, to convince oneself that that is what it means. By the way, I'm at a total loss to understand what 1 Corinthians 13:1, the verse you cited in your rebuttal, has to do with trying to prove that Jude 20 teaches ecstatic tongue speaking. For that matter, neither does 1 Corinthians 13:1 teach anything about the ecstatic "tongue speaking" you have been talking about. --Hank |
