Bible Question: ok speaking in tongues, when someone speaks in tongues, doesnt that edify the person and not the church, and i thought that someone else has to interpet, sometimes at my church this one women speaks openly during worhip in tongues and it takes away the focus on worshipping God and puts the attention on to her. |
Bible Answer: Hi, choirgirl64! Here's what Paul says about speaking in tongues: While I should like you all to speak in tongues, I would much rather you could prophesy; since those who prophesy are of grater importance than those who speak in tongues, unless they can interpret what they say so that the church is built up by it. (1 Corinthians 14:5) When these ladies speak in tongue, is the congregation being built up by the message being interpreted or is there nothing resulting from the speaking in tongue? I thank God that I speak with tongues more than any of you; all the same, when I am in the assembly I would rather say five words with my mind, to instruct others as well, than ten thousand words in a tongue. (1 Corinthians 14:18) No, Paul is not boasting that he is better than the rest... he is merely pointing out that to speak in the common language of the members of the church is more beneficial than a smorgasbord of words in strange tongues. So then, strange languages are significant not for believers, but for unbelievers; whereas on the other hand, prophesying is not for unbelievers, but for believers. Suppose that, if the whole congregation were meeting and all of them speaking intongues, and some uninitiated people or unbelievers were to come in, don't you think they would say that you were all raving? But if you were all prophesying when an unbeliever or someone uninitiated came in, he would find himself put to the test by all and judged by all and the secrets of his heart revealed; and so he would fall down on his face and worship God, declaring that God is indeed among you. (1 Corinthians 14:22-25) Where there is no edification for the entire body when some one/s is speaking in tongue it could well be that the person/s may be seeking to be the center of attention. What are we to gain if we do things just to boast of an ability? Even the demons believe in God (James 2:19), but the question is, do they humble themselves to God? Do we? God Bless! Angel |
