Subject: Why did David choose five stones? |
Bible Note: Five words of David: 1. 1 Samuel 17:26, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumsised Philistine, that he should taunt the armies of the living (God)?" 2. 1 Samuel 17:29, "What have I done now? Was it not just a question?" [marginal note, Lit, word] 3. 1 Samuel 17:32, "Let no man's heart fail on account of him; your servant will go and fight with this Philistine." 4. 1 Samuel 17:34,35, "Your servant was...And David said, "The Lord who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine." 5. 1 Samuel 17:39, "I cannot go with these, for I have not tested them." So it was after stating these five words that he chose five stones from the brook and approached the Philistine. 1 Samuel 17:49, 50, "And David put his hand into his bag and took from it a *stone and slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead. And the *stone sank into his forehead, so that he fell to the ground. Thus David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a *stone, and he struck the Philistine and killed him; but there was no sword in David's hand." 1 Samuel 17:47, "and that all this assembly may know that the (Lord) does not deliver by sword or by spear;..." How great is our Triune Rock. Psalm 89:26, "*He will cry to Me, "Thou art my Father, *my (God), and the rock of my salvation." 2 Samuel 22:47, "The (Lord) lives, and blessed by my rock; And exalted be God, [Lit, The God of the rock] the rock of my salvation."
