Subject: Why did David choose five stones? |
Bible Note: There is ample evidence in 1 Chron 20 also whereby the additonal 4 stones could have been reserved for Goliath's 4 sons. But how would have David known Goliath had 4 sons or 4 brothers for that matter. See 1 Samuel 17:26. "For who is this uncircumcised Philistine, that he should defy the armies of the living God?" What we do know and is spoken often prior to chapter 17 of 1 Sam is the 5 lords of the Philistines. It is mentioned several times. That David would have known. Either way I think it can be concluded that the stones were held for preparation for retaliation. The Philistines are described as "Proud" Zech 9:6. If one segment of the Philistines "champion" was not successful, wouldn't it be pride to send in the next segment's "champion"? The point or moral to the story is two fold. Trust in the Lord and believe in your heart that He is a Holy God. But, secondly I think it teaches us the wisdom of being prepared for known issues (the ones before us), and let God handle the unknown. |
