Bible Question:
John 13:18,19, Please explain the meaning of Christ's words, 'that the scriptures might be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me. .... when it comes to pass, ye may believe that I am he.' |
Bible Answer: Dear BP, In this passage, Jesus is speaking to His disciples at the Last Supper. He is citing the words of David when he prophetically wrote, "Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me." (Psalms 41:9 ESV) Jesus explains to His disciples that one among them will betray Him. Thus, He prepares the apostles, equipping them with instruction from which they will be able to interpret the events later, as they are going about the work of the establishment of His Church. The "close friend" to whom He refers is Judas. The Scriptures tell us of Christ's betrayal, but that topic represents only a tiny fraction of all that is said about the Messiah. A large portion of your posts, on the other hand, deal with the betrayal. With the whole sea of Biblical doctrine from which to select, it is striking that your mind would be so preoccupied with this single subject. Though well aware of my own deficiencies, I humbly encourage you to promote in yourself a different obsession. An obsession on the person, character, nature, work, and teaching of the Lord Jesus Christ Himself. Please note that the focus of John 13:18-19 is Christ and His identity, not Judas and his crime.
