Subject: Paul our pattern to follow, not Jesus? |
Bible Note: Bereaniam: Thanks for replying to me and for clarifying your earlier post. Question: "Should we as Gentiles govern our daily Christian walk by the epistles Paul wrote?" An answer: NASB Deuteronomy 8:3 "He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD." NASB Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, "It is written, 'MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.'" Notice that it says "EVERY WORD". Yes, we should live by the epistles written by Paul. We should also live by the epistles written by James, Peter, John and Jude, as well as by the gospels, the Revelation, the Pentateuch, the historical books of the OT, the wisdom books (Psalms, Proverbs, etc.), and the prophets. Why? Because "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness" (2 Timothy 3:16 NASB). Who says the writings of Paul are Scripture? Peter says so. "And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks in them of these matters. There are some things in them that are hard to understand, which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction, as they do the OTHER SCRIPTURES" (2 Peter 3:15-16 emphasis added).
