Bible Note: Mommapbs, I did not refer to James 2:17 but to 2:18 which says "I will demonstrate my faith to you from my works." Works demostrate faith. Faith is a gift from God. This is why where I come from we do not artificially quaranteen faith and works, because faith without works is mere belief, like Satan's belief, as opposed to saving faith which works as examplified in James and in Romans by Abraham. That is what Paul is talking about when he speaks of "faith working in love" and "the obedience of faith." They are not works that put God under an obligation to us, but works in response to God's grace. Paul's primary point about works was that what we do can not obligate God to save us. We can not make God do anything. God saves us because God loves us and because he wants to save us, not because we make Him obliged to save us.Our good works flow from our faith in God's love for us, God's love for us does not flow from our works. That is why we always refer to faith and works in that order and not to works and faith. Emmaus |
