Bible Question:
In relation to the thread that is going on now, (Becoming a Christian) I ask for some clarification on this verse spoken by Jesus. Mar 16:16 He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned. Does not this verse clearly equate believing with baptism, as part of the same package? Bible Answer: Hello lightedsteps, I touched on this in a blog entry earlier this year (http://srbricker.blogspot.com/2010/01/water-water-everywhere.html). What you find is that the NT references to baptism have an absolute and unbreakable link to salvation. But understand that baptism in the NT was the confession of faith like the so-called "Sinner's prayer" used today. Instead of talk, there was action. The correct understanding of what happened was misunderstood in later years of the church, eventually giving rise to the doctrine of baptismal regeneration. Steve |
