AMPLIFIED 2015 | Mark 16:1 When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome purchased [sweet-smelling] spices, so that they might go and anoint Him. [Matt 28:1-8; Luke 24:1-10; John 20:1-8] |
Bible Question: Could anyone give a few solid reasons why they think both women would have even left with spices to anoint Jesus' body (Mark 16:1) if they had no way into the tomb to attempt such a deed? |
Bible Answer: In Mark 15:42-47 We read the Sabbath was approaching so it was every important to Joseph of Arimathea that Jesus was taken care of before the day of the Lord. He took a risk in requesting the body from Pilate especially considering others were still in hiding. In vs 46 it describes how Jesus was layed out in the tomb but the preperation of His body was delayed because of the Sabbath traditions. It was after the Sabbath was over that the women went to the tomb to finish the anoiting with spices and oils and wrapping Him. I think you can reference to the story of Lazarus John 11:39-45. vs 44 And out walked the man who had been dead , his hands and feet wrapped in burial cloths (linen strips) and with a [burial] napkin bound around his face. Jesus said to them, free him of the burial wrappings and let him go. So this shows the burial practices of that time. Compare the burial of Lazarus to Jesus and you will see that they had not finished. So they would have found a way to open Jesus tomb. |
