Bible Question:
Kalos, Then, are you saying that OT people called God Yahweh when they pray? That is what I don't understand. For example, the British queen's name is Elizabeth, but nobody (maybe except for her parents) calls her Elizabeth in front of her. Do you have in fact any Biblical evidence that people called the name of Yahweh in their prayer? Jews today do not call (even read or pronounce) Yahweh because the name is so holy and Jews fear Him dearly. Thank you. |
Bible Answer: Dear Double-Nought-One-Two-Three, Since the time of the captivity Jews have interpreted Leviticus 24:16 as a prohibition against speaking the name of the Lord. Consequently, when they come to the tetragrammaton (YHWH) in the Scriptures, they substitute the Hebrew word Adonai, meaning Lord. (Thus, in many translations the word YHWH is translated as LORD, in all caps.) This prohibition is expressed in the Mishna, "He who pronounces the Name with its own letters has no part in the world to come!" In Him, Doc |
