Bible Question (short): Oath is to God, swear is to man? |
Question (full): Dear charis, Thank you for your answer. You have provided me with the NASB version of Matthew 5:36, 37. As I am using the NIV, they read, "And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No be No, anything beyond this comes from the evil one." My understanding is this: v34 says do not swear at all, while v33 says do not break our oaths to God. Does it mean that we can make an oath but cannot swear? I have always interpreted this way: making oath is to God, while swearing is to man. Thus, the difference lies here. Please correct me if I am wrong. Blessings, frum |
