Bible Question:
What is the difference between swearing and making an oath? Matt 5:33 says do not break oaths made to the Lord. Matt 5:34, however, says do not swear at all for it is God's throne. Can anyone provide with a clear explaination. The previous postings did not provide me with a clear understanding. His Blessings. |
Bible Answer: Greetings Frum! The verb translated as 'swear' in Mt. 5:34 is a verb which means 'to swear by oath.' So, there is no difference. Mt. 5:33 says that they had heard not to break their oaths, but keep the oaths they had made to the Lord. But, Mt. 5:34 says that we should not swear (by oath) at all. The point seems to be that in God's Kingdom, people should not need oaths. If people are true and honest, oaths are unnecessary. Oaths are only necessary when evil abounds. I hope this helps!
