NASB | Matthew 18:6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble, it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone hung around his neck, and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | Matthew 18:6 but whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in Me to stumble and sin [by leading him away from My teaching], it would be better for him to have a heavy millstone [as large as one turned by a donkey] hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea. [Mark 9:42; Luke 17:2] |
Subject: Jesus' thoughts on child abuse |
Bible Note: Greetings L42H, If one were too, as you suggest, take the verse in Matt. exactly as it is given wouldn’t that conclusion cause a problem? You stated: "It would not be wrong to take it literally and connect it to the topic of child abuse." Matthew 18:6 But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. If that’s your synopsis then it would only cover those, as Jesus said, “the ones that believe in me.” i.e. excluding those that don’t? Doesn’t that seem a little strange? CDBJ |
