Bible Question:
Ray, Greetings in Christ. Thanks for the sharing. I appreciate it. But being in the topic, maybe you can also share with me your view about Joseph sleeping with a woman whom he knew gave birth to the Son of God. Take note that there was no doubt in Joseph's mind that Mary's first "Son" is God ( Matt. 1:20-24 ) This issue was actually what confused me. It sounds sacrilegious to me. Bible Answer: Hi Ngop, Your question is good and I think that we can find an answer for it in the Scriptures, even the passages before us in this thread. The mystery of how Jesus can be fully man [Man] and fully God is key to this discussion, I believe. Mary was pregnant and she bore a Son. But she had help from God for He gave His only begotten Son. That which is begotten in her is of the Holy Spirit. I have already said that I look at Jesus as the Son of Mary and the Son of Joseph, and I agree with Matthew 2:8, NASB, that after His birth Herod searched for the Child [sic]. But may I lead you to compare some of the occurances of "child" in the Matthew 1 passage. I said above that Mary was "pregnant" and that is one reason that I had no problem with the lower case "with child" of Matthew 1:18 and 23. Another occurance of that "child" or "that which has been begotten" is in verse 20. Matthew 1:20, NKJ, "..."Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit." As I say, the mystery of how Jesus can be a child, in the likeness of men, is key to this verse. Mary was with child, but God gave us His Son. Matthew 1:23, "'Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name **Immanuel,' which translated means, 'God with us.'" Matthew 13:55, NKJ, "...Is not His mother called Mary? And His brothers James, Joses, Simon, and Judas? And **His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this Man get all these things?" God with us is this Man with us. 1) I would suggest that Jesus is the carpenter's Son, that Mary was with child, and that the angel of the Lord told him to receive Mary as his wife and not to be made to stumble at Him.
