Bible Note: Hi Ngop, Your interest was with the "brothers" and Matthew 13, but your comparison of revelation was with Matthew 1 so that is where the confusion is. What I think the Scriptures show us is that life is a gift from God. Eve recognized that and said "I have gotten a manchild with the help of the Lord/" Joseph realized that the Lord could even have a virgin give birth, Matthew 1:23,24. John, the gospel writer, realized that God gave His unique Son that believers in Him might have eternal life. 1) I think that the desire to deny that Jesus had any brothers and sisters is the desire to set Jesus apart from other people. Indeed, that is a desire of mine also as I talk about the Man versus the man, the Light of the world versus our being lights of the world, etc. That is why I think of Jesus as the Son of Mary rather than the son of Mary; why I think of Him as the Child rather than a child. a) If we think of Him as the Son of God, I see no reason why any church should be concerned with Mary having sons and daughters with her husband. 2) The problem lies in that many do not and did not see Him as the Son of God. The Matthew 13 reference pointed out that fact. Verse 56, "'And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this man [sic] get all these things?' And they took offense at Him/." Slash mine for comparisons. They took offense at Him [sic]. They would not have taken offense at him [sic] if he were just a man. But Jesus claimed to be a Prophet. 3) I go with the NKJ here for Matthew 13:55, "Where did this Man get this wisdom and these mighty works?" 4) I find it interesting that the Greek for verse 54 concerns His "fatherland". In the NKJ it is translated His own "country", in the NASB His "hometown". I do not agree with the translators that they speak of His coming to His fatherland and yet go on and ask "Is this not the carpenter's son?" Where is the consistency in that? I know Him as the Son of Joseph and the Son of Mary, and the Son of Abraham, as well as the Son of David. Can you praise the Lord with me? Matthew 13:56, "And His sisters, are they not all with us? Where then did this *Man get all these things?' And they took offense at Him/." John 3:18, "[The one] who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten *Son of God./" From the heart, Ray |
