AMPLIFIED 2015 | Daniel 1:8 ¶ But Daniel made up his mind that he would not defile (taint, dishonor) himself with the king's finest food or with the wine which the king drank; so he asked the commander of the officials that he might [be excused so that he would] not defile himself. Bible Question: Thanks! With regard to the second reason, I have a follow-up question: Daniel did ask for vegetables to eat and water to drink (Daniel 1 V.12), the vegetables might not properly prepared by hand that weren't first washed and etc. - why this is acceptable to Daniel? |
Bible Answer: cklam Vegetables were considered unimportant, meat, fat and wine were what was sought after. They would never offer vegetables to a god, it would be an insult. Also since they were vegetables they could be washed by Daniel and his friends. I believe the whole situation was bewildering to Daniel's captors and I imagine they probably brought Daniel and his friends raw vegetables dumping them out saying if you want to eat these okay, but we are going to check on you in ten days. An important part of the story is not so much what they ate. It is the training these young boys had to received from childhood. Their parents raised them knowing God and implanted within them a desire to serve none other than God. Archeological accounts of other captives of Babylon testify that Daniel and his young friends probably saw their mothers and sisters raped their fathers and uncles chained together with iron hook through the lower jaw being marched unmercifully to Babylon. These four young men were horribly mutilated by castration. Yet they put their desire to honor God before their own welfare. Most would be crying out “why me oh God!” Remember Daniel didn't have the book of Daniel to read, when he made his request known he probably wondered if it was going to be the last words he ever spoke. This story in Daniel should be an inspiration to all Godly men and women of the importance of teaching their children of God. I hope this helps Ed |
