You may want to also check out Trancendental Meditation, much of it is similar. Also very close is the religious aspect of Karate and other martial arts. Most focus on 'qui' (Chinese) or 'ki' or 'ki-ai' (Japanese) which is the 'power that is within you.' These religions say that when you become aware of 'that which is in you,' you have power. Finally, you seem to think that if you know more about it you may know how to help your friend. Frankly, I don't think that this is so.
