Bible Question: Does everyone have discernment or is it a gift? If it is a gift, is it a gift of the Holy Spirit or is it a gift from God? |
Bible Answer: According to Isaiah 27:11 and Philippians 1:9, "discernment" is presented and attributed to more than one person, thus meaning that everyone should have at least a 'mild understanding' of discernment, since we are new creatures in Jesus Christ and not of this world. Discernment is defined as "the act of perceiving or recognizing the difference, to make out clearly" by Webster's New World College Dictionary. However, verses such as 1 Samuel 25:33; 1 Kings 3:11; 4:29; Job 12:20; Psalm 2:10; 119:66; Proverbs 2:3; Isaiah 29:14; and Daniel 2:14 all attribute the 'gift' of discernment to one special person or special 'people', which supports the idea that "discernment" is a spiritual gift that is given by the Holy Spirit; a gift that is given like the gift of speaking in tongues, prophecy, encouragement, etc., etc. --Nolan |
