Subject: At what moment do we go to heaven? |
Bible Note: Dear Russ: Followers of Christ are charged to exercise diligence in preaching/teaching the word, to convince, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine -- the NIV translates "with great patience and careful instruction." (2 Timothy 4:2). Peter tells Christians to "be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason for the hope that is in you," -- and he adds "with meekness and fear." (1 Peter 3:15). The phrase "with meekness and fear" has also been translated "with gentleness and respect." ...... The central message in both these passages is this: Followers of Christ are to preach, teach, and defend the true gospel of Christ; they are to confront (rebuke) false teaching; and they are to be prepared to give everyone who asks a reason for their hope in Christ Jesus; but they are to do all these things in a loving spirit characterized by gentleness and respect. ..... This does not mean that believers are to ignore false teaching and let it slide for fear of being critical or judgmental. False teaching indeed should be challenged, it should be rebuked, it should be exposed for what it is by pointing out its errors in light of what Scripture clearly teaches. Paul was not afraid to speak boldly and candidly to the Galatians concerning their false doctrines. Russ, you referred in your post to some of the Forum's taboos, such as Calvinism/Arminianism debating. Yes, it is forbidden because when the C/A debates raged so furiously for so long on this Forum, several things happened. A large number of users left in frustration and disgust, bitterness and divisiveness were the fruits of these debates, nothing was ever settled, and each side in the debates came away more convinced than ever that their position was the only right one. ...... I agree with you, we argue way too much, when what we all of us ought to do is study the word more and argue our opinions less. If during my 70 years up to now, I had been able to sell all my flawed opinions for a dollar apiece, I could now be counted among the world's richest men! --Hank |
