Subject: Animals in the New Testament? |
Bible Note: Dear MW, What can I say? Been there, done that! :-) I can empathize! I have had almost identical discussions with people. Ended them the same way, too... well, I said "Cowboys" rather than "Colts!" :-) I had about 20 milk goats. In feeding them I used to get them to eat in a certain order. The pregnant nannies first. Now, you can't talk to a goat. Goats don't communicate commands to one another via sound. They communicate by being rough with one another. Consequently, I used to use a long, axe handle. When I popped them and prodded them, they understood and got with the program. However, I got a lot of criticism for being "mean to the goats." Of course, the criticisms only came from those who had no clue about the nature of goats. (I also butchered quite a few baby billy goats. I enjoyed playing with them, too, but every animal on a farm has to pay for itself.) In the case of your sister, though, another verse comes to mind: "Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me?" (Matthew 20:15a ESV) This is one of the verse on which free enterprise is based. We may not agree with the sagacity of your sisters choice, but she does nothing wrong by expending resources on her cat. Indeed, if she did not, then she would violating her own conscience (cf Romans 14). These sorts of things only take place because we are a prosperous society. Thank you for an interesting discussion.
