Bible Question:
I have been searching for a solid answer about the Sabbath. I have always worshiped on Sunday. But here is something that I am thinking about. Today we believe in every Commandment but Sabbath worship. Why. Now I have always thought worship on Sunday is the same, but it is not. Sabbath is a time of rest, but for me all my life the only real rest might of been a nap. Today we play every sport, or watch them. We shop, go to movies, play golf, cards, just about everything, but little relates to even thinking about God. Here is my concern, question, Is worship on Sunday morning, or evening, if your church has a evening service, really the same as what done before Jesus died? I know some things like no cooking was a man made, but the way most of us do is not a day of rest, but a day off to do as we see fit, after Sunday worship. In my mind something is just not right. Is anyone else thinking like me? just me |
Bible Answer: First you have to remember that Jesus would have observed the Sabbath because he was fulfilling the law. Now we can enter a permanent rest from works, and thus we do not observe the sabbath. If we did, then we would have to follow the law, which means we could not even pick up sticks. Also the sabbath is on Saturday and no where in the Bible does it state that has changed. Colossians 2:16 14having canceled out the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us, which was hostile to us; and He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15When He had disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public display of them, having triumphed over them through Him. 16Therefore no one is to act as your judge in regard to food or drink or in respect to a festival or a new moon or a Sabbath day— 17things which are a mere shadow of what is to come; but the substance belongs to Christ. Galatians 4:7-10 7Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir through God. 8However at that time, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature are no gods. 9But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how is it that you turn back again to the weak and worthless elemental things, to which you desire to be enslaved all over again? 10You observe days and months and seasons and years. 11I fear for you, that perhaps I have labored over you in vain. In verse 3 below it specifically points out that Christians enter God's rest and therefore have no regulation to continue to observe the Sabbath. Hebrews 4:3-11 3For we who have believed enter that rest, just as He has said, "AS I SWORE IN MY WRATH, THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST," although His works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4For He has said somewhere concerning the seventh day: "AND GOD RESTED ON THE SEVENTH DAY FROM ALL HIS WORKS"; 5and again in this passage, "THEY SHALL NOT ENTER MY REST." 6Therefore, since it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly had good news preached to them failed to enter because of disobedience, 7He again fixes a certain day, "Today," saying through David after so long a time just as has been said before, "TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE, DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS." 8For if Joshua had given them rest, He would not have spoken of another day after that. 9So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. 10For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. 11Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience. In this last passage Paul points out not to judge others for observing days but certainly is not say you should observe days as is a law. Romans 14:5-6 5One person regards one day above another, another regards every day alike. Each person must be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who observes the day, observes it for the Lord, and he who eats, does so for the Lord, for he gives thanks to God; and he who eats not, for the Lord he does not eat, and gives thanks to God. |
