Bible Question: What is the significance of "lifting up of hands" in worship? Lifting up of one's hands in worship can be found in Psalm 28:2; 63:4; 119:48; 134:2; Lamentations 2:19; 3:41; and Hebrews 12:12.. Does the "lifting up of hands" have a special meaning? |
Bible Answer: Nicodemus, Lifting up of hands done is never in the context of worship. I heard that some lift their hands as a sign of surrender, praise or victory. But, is this being humble before the Lord, in worship? I don't think so. The verses you cite, have nothing to do with worhip, even in the context: Psalm 28:2 is during a cry for mercy (prayer ?) Psalm 63:4 is during a time of praise Psalm 119:48 is surrender to His commands Psalm 134:2 is during a time of praise Lamentations 2:19 is during a cry for one's children (prayer ?) Lamentations 3:41 is during a time of confession of sin Hebrews 12:12 is about strengthening arms and knees Study the context of these passages to see if their is worship. Of course you can change the meaning of worship as defined by God, as others have. Steve |
