Subject: Are we back to the absurd view...? |
Bible Note: Greetings Justme! Excellent comments my friend! May I add to your point? I don't want to make people lose confidence in the Bible (it is reliable), but the problem extends even beyond the translation issue. The text which is actually translated must also be decided upon. The KJ Only people seem to operate on the assumption that there was one established Biblical text. This is false. There are thousands of manuscripts which differ from one another in various ways (mostly dealing with minor issues). Textual critics have to compare and evalute those differences in order to determine the actual text. The KJV was based upon the textual choices of one man using only a handful of manuscripts, none of which was older than the 10th to 12th century. Modern texts are based upon the work of many individuals using thousands of manuscripts, some of which are as old as the 2nd to 3rd century. This is not to say that KJV is bad. It isn't. All of the translations agree the vast majority of the time. There are occasions where they differ, and everyone may not agree with the textual choices made, but every text is the result of textual choices. There simply is not one 'offical' text.
