Bible Question:
Ok...I got you now. I like the idea of knowing that God, knowing that we will reject Him and cause Him pain, still loves us enough to give us a second chance. Which brings to mind another question concerning the "lake of fire". Will those who will spend eternity in the lake of fire be tormented eternally or will this judgement result in a "second death"? I am a little confused on this point. |
Bible Answer: The "second death" is eternal death. The "first death" (Gen.2:17) occured in the Garden of Eden when Adam ate the forbidden fruit-Rom.5:12 "Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned" When we hear the gospel call to repent and believe we should obey and not wait-we have no assurance God will give us a second chance-we must not fall into the sin of presumption. As faith is a gift of God, so is true repentance. We can not repent in our own strength but must be given the ability to forsake/turn from our sins with godly sorrow by the activity of God the Holy Spirit. When we disobey the gospel call we grieve/quench the Holy Spirit. "Today, if you hear His voice, Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion" Heb.3:15 |
