Bible Question (short): release from Leviticus

Question (full): Hello,

I'm not a Christian, but I'm very curious about the smaller details of organized religion.

Recently a friend told me that Jesus died on the cross so that we would be released from our sins, and the (clearly pretty nutsy) laws in Leviticus. (like the shellfish one, selling your wife, etc.)

I was just wondering if that's correct?
