Subject: Why was God unhappy with Cains offering? |
Bible Note: Hi WOS, You bring up an excellent question. And, while you're right that scripture does not directly tell us why Abels' sacrifice was acceptable and Cains' not, there is some inference that can be made. Note Gen. 3:17, "And to Adam he said, “Because you have listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of which I commanded you, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of your life" God had cursed the ground. In Gen. 4:2 we are told that Abel was a keeper of flocks but Cain was a tiller of the ground. Then in 4:3 we note that Cains' sacrifice was "an offering to the Lord of the fruit of the ground"! Though it's not directly stated, I think there's a strong correlation between what God cursed and His displeasure at Cains sacrifice. Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |
