901 | No man ever spoke like this Man, NKJ | John 7:51 | Rowdy | 110357
Of course, we are contrasting two different passages with a different audience in each one. The first one Jn 7:51, it is Nicodemus asking the Lord the question whereas with the following, Judas is asking. 15"If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[3] in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." 22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" 23Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25"All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. From the context, I like the comforting words from our Lord about His sending the Comforter and of course He is represented as being in God's Word, the Bible. He is the one who empowered the Apostles through their ministry and He gives us strength and assistance when we pray for it. Now that we have the historical records of those events, including the miracles and the many other activities of the early christians in the first century, we no longer need a miraculous measure of that Holy Spirit. God wants us to reach the highest level of faith and accept His existance and His Words in complete faith and trust. This of course shouldn't be a blind faith but one that is built on a solid set of circumstantial evidence and personal testimonies from our christian predecessors. However, I'd be the last person in the world to put any restrictions on our Lord or God, the Father. All 3 of the Godhead are certainly able to do anything they wish, thus we know or experience someone who enjoys remission of cancer after the doctors have completely given up all hope of this person living after a few months. All I'm asking is that we test the spirits of this modern age as we're directed in 1 John: 1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. If people claim to have miraculous powers as we see in the Bible, let us look for miracles of the same kind we see in our Bibles. I would urge caution about believing that God acts through people in this day and age. ALL Bible examples of this kind of miraculous power involve Apostles or someone who received that power by the laying on of Apostles hands. All except for Corneilius. He received the same dose of power from God as did the Apostles. So unless there are some 2,000 year old Apostles walking around, God doesn't work miracles through people any longer. He imparts those wonderful feats of healing directly. What is your conclusion about the matter, this contrast? God bless. |

902 | Would someone explain Isaiah 6. | Is 6:1 | Rowdy | 110348
I would agree with most everything in your answer except for the portion about the stump of tree. I would refer you to Paul's Letter to the Romans, Chap 15. Here Paul concludes that the remnant from that tree is God's very own Son, Jesus Christ. This is consistent with most of the OT. Throughout the history of the Israelite nation, God kept helping and blessing a remnant of His family so His Son could be born in accordance with the promise He made to Abraham. It was this remnant or root of Jesse, His Son who came to earth to die for the sins of everyone and provide the utlimate sacrifice, taking our place in God's perfect world of justice and redemption. I don't really believe the Jewish nation has anything to do with any special recognition or any other function in this Christian age. Jews should be treated just like they were in the first century; they can become christians just like you and me. God turned His back forever on the Isrealites as a nation. No one nation, not even the USA can claim any special relationship with him, only His children through the blood of His Son can claim that special relationship of fatherhood with God as Father and Jesus Christ as the saviour. Remember our God is a Spirit and we as His children must look forward to giving up this physical world and graduate to the next world, hopfully covered by the blood of Christ. Otherwise we fall into the hand of God, woefully unprepared. God bless. |

903 | Worshiptainment | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 110326
The only response I can think of is that of God's Word. I've found it's true like so many have said before: God's Word has literally amazing depth and breadth. It covers every imaginable subject we NEED to know about God and eternity. When we present God's Word in its simplicity and straight forwardness, its inner beauty shouts to those who are receptive to it. God proclaims "Here I am, I love you and here's how bad I want you back." I can only say instead of complaining about all the garbage and the bad stuff in the world, we need to keep looking and find people that are truly interested in sticking to the Bible and love souls. I can further say that there's good and bad throughout the world, everywhere. So, continue looking and above all, continue studying God's Word and of course continue praying. God bless you all. |

904 | Question from a newbie | Luke 14:26 | Rowdy | 110323
I, too, would like to offer a word or two of support and encouragement. I think you're doing the right thing in following God and His Word. Sure, all of us that have been associated with God's family and have lived on the earth for a while could cite many, many examples of such hypocrisy and other sinful behavior. In some few cases, it may stem from naive lack of knowledge but most often it's a situation of someone who has deceived him/herself into their own undoing. But how can this kind of logic make any sense when we're talking about where you and I and everyone will spend our eternity? The person drowning in the ocean doesn't ask about the integrity of everyone of the rescue boat; he just climbs aboard and hangs on for dear life. And here's a bonus: Just maybe, you'll discover a bunch of christians who really do believe God's Word AND obeys it and maybe even lead your parents by your example to their salvation. Going home to Heaven with God is so much better when you die knowing your family is going with you. I pray God helps you in this endeavor. |

905 | What is Biblical Chruch Government? | Acts 14:23 | Rowdy | 110311
I have been an active member in many different congregations of the Lord's Body, around the country and around the world. I was a deacon in one congregation for four years. I have served in congregations, both with elders and deacons and those without. There's not any specific scripture that be called upon to support my statement so I'll call it common sense inferred from the God's intent I see in His Word. I believe God really does want us to mature as individual christians and collectively as congregations where we see the urgent need for elders and deacons. (It's my belief that you can't have one without the other, that is "elders AND deacons.") Having traveled as much as I have and seen and experienced the amount of pain and heartache I've seen in my lifetime, I now know at least a little bit of the reasons why our Lord set up this pattern of government in His Body, the church. We humans, especially Americans, have a great tendency to be individuals, think, speak and do things as an individual. But we come together as a part of the Lord's church, we need to humble ourselves to follow God's pattern. In the Bible, we see the separate congregations at least per city were totally independent and autonomous with each other. Although the elders consult with each other on tough decisions like we see in Acts 15, this is the highest form government we see in NT. And they had a miraculous measure of the Holy Spirit helping them. After installing elders in a congregation, they should be followed with complete humility and submission. The only time any decision should be questioned is if it goes counter with God's Word and not in just one man's opinion but it should be confirmed with at least one other man's opinion with specific scripture to support that conclusion. I suppose almost everyone on this Forum knows about the qualifications from the Bible for elders and deacons. But just in case, they're in 1 Tim 3. It should be understood without saying but I gotta say it anyway: It's paramount that these qualifications be followed to the best of our ability. It's those qualifications that equip our elders and deacons to do the very important job they do. It's also very, very important that elders and deacons do their jobs with this utmost in their minds. They'll all be judged to a higher standard on God's Judgement Day and that everything they do should reflect glory to God and God's love to man. In other words, these men should love all mankind to a high degree and realize how humbling the appointment of this office should be. We must buffet our spiritual bodies just like the Apostle Paul did to keep ourselves humble but this practice is paramount with elders and deacons. As I see it, following God's pattern in His Word is one of the secrets to preventing a lot of mistakes and helps toward long-term, successful life of the church. That's why divorce between husband and wife in the Lord's church is getting to be a problem throughout the church. We all need to aspire to grow in faith, maturity and understanding of God's will. This includes our aspirations to be teachers, deacons and yes, even elders. If we're not growing in this manner, then we must look inward and find out why. Soul-searching and constant re-evaluation is a very good thing to do as far as God is concerned. Now you might be asking about overseers, bishops, shepards and pastors. In the Greek language, the Bible writers were referring to the same person, as elders. The word prophet is one that means our modern day preacher or minister. Well, that's my two cents worth. Let's hear from you folks. God bless us all. |

906 | Is Holy Communion for baptised believers | 1 Cor 11:27 | Rowdy | 110305
I haven't read Yancey's book you've referred to but I have read some of his other books. It sounds difficult to believe that he could write a book that would go counter with God's Word, especially to the degree and the tenor of your message. Getting beyond all that, can you quote from the Bible any scriptures to support your conclusion. I tried to look over your statement and contrast it with the scripture above, 1 Cor 11:27 to come up with your conclusion but was unable to do so. Could you do us a favor and state your conclusion about this matter in one short, simple sentence? And then back it up with scripture for support. Thanks. God bless. |

907 | Did David disobey? | 1 Kin 3:14 | Rowdy | 110302
I like to think our God looks at our lives in their sum total. Is our heart and soul really devoted to Him or the Devil? It's a question we have to ask ourselves every day AND it's just as important that we answer in the affirmative and then repent as often as necessary, at least daily if not hourly. As to what David was thinking while committing the sin(s) he committed. I conclude that every man/woman likes to think they can hide this one small sin from God just like Adam tried in the Garden. But alas our God is the wisest of all parents. He knows our every thought before we're born but somehow we still have the freedom of choice. Explain that? How can I or anybody else explain it? I'm waiting till I get to heaven. Also, I do think we can gain a lot from Peter's example of walking on the water. As long as he and we are focused on God or His Son, we can do amazing things but when we take our eyes away from that kind of devotion, we're all in for trouble. God bless. |

908 | what does God say/think aboutt warriors? | Acts 10:1 | Rowdy | 110301
I get at least a little comfort from Acts 10 as I am also military oriented, being USAF retired. I thank God that He chose Corneilius to be the one and only Gentile family in the whole Bible to ever receive a baptismal measure of the Holy Spirit, same as the Apostles. But notice even after receiving this approval and blessing, he and his household, were baptized and became Christians. I say all this because as you may have noticed Corneilius was a centurion in the Roman Army. So God certainly does approve of the military being in the kingdom or His Son's church. Now, in stark contrast to this we see in the Gospels, the account of Peter taking the sword and cutting off the ear of one of those about to arrest our Lord. But "No," says our Lord, this is not to be and restores the ear. So our Lord and His Father DOES NOT want a militaristic portion of people imposing God's lifestyle on anybody. The freedom of choice is one of the main themes throughout the Bible, starting in the Garden of Eden and on through Revelation. One cannot cite any Biblical commands or any examples implying this kind of behavior. In fact, we are encouraged to bless those who curse or persecute us as christians. I hope this is clear and God bless in your continued studies. |

909 | WHAT IS PURGATORY? WHO NEEDS IT? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 110011
The best I can do for you is recommend the following website: http://www.apologeticspress.org/ There they get pretty deep into the Word and are much more qualified to discuss those tough subjects. I gotta say I don't really believe in this idea as it doesn't have any basis in the Bible. I think it was fostered by the Catholic church over the past several centuries, but again study with those folks at that website. God bless. |

911 | How to "win the world" ? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 109997
I'm afraid I have to chime in on Dblessor's side on this issue. Sure, I guess we could all cite criticisms about the church on a national level. I've posted a few negative comments myself but the most important thing our Lord wants us to do is realize that there's always going to be sin in the world. There's also going to be a large number of those deceived into thinking they have found true Christianity. That's been going on since the first century. We can even read in Acts 13 about false prophets as follows: 5When they arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John was with them as their helper. 6They traveled through the whole island until they came to Paphos. There they met a Jewish sorcerer and false prophet named Bar-Jesus, 7who was an attendant of the proconsul, Sergius Paulus. The proconsul, an intelligent man, sent for Barnabas and Saul because he wanted to hear the word of God. And everyone remembers the warnings from Apostle Paul to his son of faith, Timothy. So all of God's children everywhere need to understand God knew this would happen. We need to keep studying God's Word with an attitude of "better safe than sorry." So what does all this mean to you and me. In my opinion, it means we have to keep looking. If we see stuff that seems to make our worship less than what it should be, we shouldn't follow Cain's example and get angry about it. We should look around for the Abels in the world and follow their lead, most especially IF they're following God's Word. As always, God bless you all. |

912 | LIERS WILL NOT INHERIT,OR SEE KINGDOM OF | Rev 21:1 | Rowdy | 109975
I believe you're looking for the following: Revelation 21 7He who overcomes will inherit all this, and I will be his God and he will be my son. 8But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death." 9One of the seven angels who had the seven bowls full of the seven last plagues came and said to me, "Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb." God bless. |

915 | Visiting the neighbors. | 1 Tim 5:13 | Rowdy | 109963
There's several verses in Proverbs, making it very clear that God hates gossiping. But the scripture above makes it very clear. If that doesn't do the trick, you may resort to harsher means. It depends on how much this person's friendship means to you, hopefully NOT more than your relationship with God. I assume you might already know some little bit of truth about her background, something she's not particularly proud to share with everybody. Remind her that she wouldn't appreciate someone's sharing that with the whole neighborhood. Remind her that we're all human and have made mistakes in our lives. (Some of us, bigger than others; I know because I've made some whoppers.) As a last resort, you may have to warn her that her continued gossiping with you might have to cost her the friendship you share and you would appreicate if she would stop. I'm afraid that's all I can offer for advice. God be with you and be strong for Him. |

916 | candidates for water baptism | NT general Archive 1 | Rowdy | 109960
I can only describe what I do and those with whom I worship. Since we don't have the Holy Spirit's baptism of miraclous powers to help us, we have to get to know the person(s) in question. Form that close of bond of friendship, real friendship, the kind that let's them know we really have their soul's interest at heart. Find out what they know of the scriptures and what they already believe. You may remember, each of the example of saving people in the Bible starts with the person where they're at. Apollos, for instance already believed in God but was teaching John the Baptist baptism so he needed to be corrected. Anyway, after confirming and teaching as necessary God's plan of salvation, it's just a matter of time until that new disciple of God is ready to commit his whole life to Christ as his savior and Lord. It might be mentioned here, it's also a good idea to recite the Lord's caution about the sacrifice of this decision, and the fact that this new babe in Christ will face the very real possibility of ridicule and maybe even persecution, especially in another country. Until this process is completed, that is until he/she makes that committment, they're not able to be added to the Lord's church as we see demonstrated through the Book of Acts and the NT. But that doesn't mean we stop loving them, we just have to wait in accordance with God's time-table. We plant the seed and let God provide for the ultimate fruit within. Good question and God bless. |

917 | Christian Nation? You decide. | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 109959
I wanted to post a response to Lilithcrown's statement but only because I'd like to see a resurgence of American patriotism but with a christian slant to it. I realize that some of our founding fathers, those involved in the original forming of our country and its government didn't all have a perfect set of christian values and they were first and foremost human. But my main purpose in posting that reminder about our country's history was to just let people know that we as a nation have most certainly experienced a tremendous down-slide in christian values. Don't misunderstand...I'd be the last person in the world to advocate that we need to recognize Christianity as the country's official religion. Once again, that's another big mistake fostered by the Roman Empire and we need to get away from following their lead. Our nation got off to a good start, not because of any official or national recognition of Christianity but because most Americans, 200 years ago at the very least had a healthy respect for God and His Book of love letters to us as His creation. Although many Americans in that time frame may not have been practicing and faithful christians, most of them were good, moral people. We as a nation need to recognize this gradual decline and once again turn our heads back toward our God and give Him what He is due. Worship in the manner with which you're comfortable, find people of like precious faith...just "go to church" somewhere. If we don't and choose instead to keep following this path of neglecting God and His Book, our children in the future might end up regretting that choice. You might know, in some circles, there is a fear that in the future, some of the countries to which we've been sending missionaries might be motivated to send their own missionaries back to this country to win us back to that very same God. Following the advice of Joshua in the OT: As for me and my house, we will follow our Lord and we would like to have you all come with us. As always, God bless ALL the participants of this Forum. Yes, that includes Mr. Lilithcrown. Continue studying. |

918 | Does anyone believe in partial rapture? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 109958
I just followed your request and checked out the website as you provide. But I only saw the word "partial" that one single time in the very first line so I like the others need a fuller explanation. Exactly what do you and Mr. Nee mean by "Partial Rapture?" Please understand, I'm not saying I believe in all this stuff about Rapture but I'm trying to maintain an open mind. As I've mentioned in other posts, Revelation is a very difficult book but in any case should be submissive while interpreting to the rest of the Bible. Most of the other Bible scriptures cited in my opinion seem to apply to the one and only end of the world, after which comes the one and only final judgement. But again, I'll try to be open minded about this but it is difficult. |

920 | Is marriage necessary? | Bible general Archive 2 | Rowdy | 109882
If you mean to ask Bible students and to get a Bible based answer, it's important to recognize the most powerful and ultimately the decisive answer is God's from His Word. Now, mind you, I'm assuming you and all others reading this are truly and absolutely dedicated to going home to Heaven with God for eternity. Then, that presupposes that person is going to obey God and His instructions in His Word. You see, our first priority relationship is with God the Father and then with our fellow christians. Now of course, the next smart step for a man or woman is to find a mate with whom they can look forward to going to Heaven, for it's far easier if your spouse is there in your corner and your best soul-mate. After you've concluded that a particular person meets that criteria, it's always best to be quite certain so this decision should be slow in coming. Now this next point might be controversial but this is what I think: the only way we're going to truly please God is to make that firm committment and get married in the sight of both God and man, meeting the full requirements of the law. God has put a blessing on the proper and sincere governments across our world. We should do everything in our power to honor that blessing. If we're going to live in a particular nation and enjoy the benefits and bear the responsibilities of that nation, then we should be willing to follow the customs, laws, etc of that nation, including that of marriage. But remember with God, marriage was intended from the beginning to be a life-long proposition and above all, we do want to go to Heaven. Another big benefit of following God's plan my wife and I have noticed in our marriage: God's Word is a wonderful and perfect referee when needed. When both husband and wife are committed to going to the same Heavenly desitnation and constantly look up to God, it tends to reduce looking aside and arguing about the petty concerns thrown at us from the world about us. Another benefit to be considered is the example we set for our kids and our grandkids. It's difficult to explain the really big mistakes in your life; I know, I've tried. Remember we will MOST DEFINITELY reap what we sow. God bless you all. |
