841 | what is the greek word for "taketh away" | 1 Cor 11:32 | Mommapbs | 34510
Greetings Sharon! Consider this passage: "A man ought to examine himself before he eats of the bread and drinks of the cup.For anyone who eats and drinks without recognizing the body of the Lord eats and drinks judgment on himself. That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep. But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment. When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. 1 Cor 11:28-32 From these verses it seems to me that the Lord will discipline those He loves, those who are "in the vine" to the point of removing them. This is not to say that they lose their salvation, but they are removed from this earthly existence. ("fallen asleep") The reason is because they are not bearing any fruit - even after much pruning. This is a very sobering train of thought, but one worth considering as we understand the "cost of discipleship!" In Him, Mommapbs |

842 | Tithing... | 2 Cor 9:7 | Mommapbs | 34506
Greetings Clay! Yes indeed this subject has been "hashed and thrashed." You will find some excellent posts under the notes on this verse as well as using the "search feature" on tithing. "Each one must do just as he has purposed in his heart, not grudgingly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver." I believe that according to this verse, the Lord is more concerned about the attitude of your heart rather than the amount that you give. Remember is ALL belongs to him anyway! Blessings in Jesus! 843 | what is meant by work out your own salva | Philippians | Mommapbs | 34504
Greetings in Jesus' Name! Although non-scriptural, an illustration that comes to mind is a "workout!" We exercize the body to maintain or improve its physical condition. It is not enough to just go the the gym and "look at" the equipment - you have to USE it! This can also be applied to our spiritual health and "conditioning!" "In Training!" Mommapbs |

844 | What is 'the fruit of the vine'? | Matt 26:29 | Mommapbs | 34491
"The LORD of hosts will prepare a lavish banquet for all peoples on this mountain; A banquet of aged wine, choice pieces with marrow, And refined, aged wine." Isaiah 25:6 Greetings Tim! This verse describes the welcome that God is preparing for those who will be eternal residents in His Kingdom. Could Jesus be referring to this event in Matthew 26:29? Hungry and thirsty! Mommapbs |

845 | is it wrong to gamble? | Prov 16:33 | Mommapbs | 34407
What do you think? Does this verse refer to gambling? How is casting a lot different? I think that when a person "gambles,"they choose to depend upon luck rather than God. A life lived like this is indeed a "crap shoot." We are called to a life of dependency - WHO or WHAT we depend upon will determine our choices. With this in mind, WHAT is the objective of gambling? Is this objective honoring to God? Hope this helps you sort out an answer for yourself! Mommapbs |

846 | I think I'm hopeless... | Gen 2:17 | Mommapbs | 34200
If God was weak, we would all be hopeless, but God is Almighty and it is just by His grace, His mercy alone that we are not condemned to death for our sin. Why animals? Why blood? The only clue I have is this: "The life is in the blood." Lev. 17:11 declares: "For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement." God has declared that "Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness." He makes the rules, not us. God did not change His mind about the necessity of a blood sacrifice. He promised us a Redeemer immediately after the first sin.(Gen. 3:15) Without the Promise of God,no one would be saved from the penatly of death. How God chose to reveal His Way, from the covering of Adam and Eve with the skins of animals to the atonement by their blood is a picture and foreshadowing of Christ, God's ultimate manifestation of His great love and mercy for us! To transfer to penalty of my sin to His precious Son is AMAZING and never ceases to cause me to bow in humble submission to Him for what He has done for me! Only those who have rejected such a wonderful gift are to be pitied. As for the animals, remember that God gave them to us, not the other way around. Innocent slaughter? This is but another reminder of Christ's innocence. "He who knew no sin became sin for us"; He stood in our place, He was the subsitute, He IS the Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world! Even when you don't understand God's ways, I encourage you to PRAISE HIM AND THANK HIM for who He is! Blessings, Momma |

847 | why the need for a sacrifice? | Gen 2:17 | Mommapbs | 34172
Greeting Chynna! I just recently posted this note to a fellow forum member and I am copying it for you to consider in light of your question. Blessings, Mommapbs. This is taken from "The Fragrance of Death" In reading the book of Leviticus, we learn about all the sacrifices that the Israelites were required to make. There sure were a lot of dead animals! Although I understood the necessity of blood (“for without the shedding of blood, there is no forgiveness” Hebrews 9:22), I did not understand how these offerings could be “a pleasing aroma unto the Lord.” Lev 4:31 I’ve smelled burning flesh and it is anything but sweet! I’ve also smelled death. To me, the stench of death is repulsive; yet what I was reading in Leviticus prompted me to ask, “Why is death an attractive fragrance to God?” I found the answer in a devotional by Tommy Tenney called The Daily Chase. For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing. To the one we are the smell of death; to the other, the fragrance of life. And who is equal to such a task? II Corinthians 2:15-16 I asked, “What was the “aroma of Christ?” God, through Tenney, answered: “It was His death!” To God, the smell of death is pleasing; I finally understood why God required so much blood! The penalty for sin is death and the Life is in the blood. “For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood by reason of the life that makes atonement.” Lev. 17:11 Something had to die, for without the shedding of blood (death) there is no forgiveness. Without forgiveness, there is no way for God to come close to US! God wanted His people to be able to draw near unto Him. Yet He is Holy and our sin prevents the intimacy that God longs for; so He provided a Way - from the first sin covered by the bloodied skins of animals to the last covered by the perfect blood of Christ - we come to God only through the blood. Jesus said, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6 Those who been bathed in the shed blood of Christ are a pleasing aroma in God’s nostrils. Yet, to “those who are perishing,” we, who wear the “perfume” of the Christ, are odious. Non-believers will make every effort to close the windows of their souls or run for the bag of lime to remove the repulsive insult of Jesus to their senses . . . John the Baptist was the first to understand the sacrifice of self that God calls us to make when he said, “He must increase but I must decrease.” (John 3:30) And the Apostle Paul instructs believers to “present our bodies as living sacrifices . . .” (Romans 12:2) We do this by denying our “self will” in exchange for His “good will!” Jesus tells us, “If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.” Luke 9:23 By doing so, we can live the “abundant life” that God so longs for us to have with Him daily. When we are “dead” to self, Christ is able to live His life with and through us to accomplish His purposes. God loves the smell of death . . . Jesus said, “For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me will find it.” Matthew 16:25 What fragrance are you wearing? How you “smell” to God is the only thing that matters! Are you bathed in the sweet aroma of Christ? Have you become a “living sacrifice” or are you still crawling off the altar? Are you dead yet? Deny yourself, die to self and live! |

848 | why should a leader have passion | Eph 5:18 | Mommapbs | 34168
It isn't vital for a leader to be filled with anything except the Holy Spirit! Apart from Him, we can do nothing! No amount of passion, energy, excitement or positive outlook can compare to the activity of the Holy Spirit in the life of the believer. Without the presence or activity of the Spirit, our service or ministry is merely a work of the flesh. Perhaps we, as well as our leaders, need to be reminded of this! (This surely will take the pressure off us in one respect won't it?) Mommapbs |

849 | Double portion is really only two-thirds | 2 Kin 2:9 | Mommapbs | 33838
Greetings Tennessee Preacher! After reading your post I was reminded about something I learned from Tim Keller (NYC Pastor) about the inheritance in the story of the Prodigal Son. The father divided his estate between the two sons (the older son got the two thirds and the prodigal got the reamining third). Since the father's estate had been distributed and the younger son squandered all of his inheritance, from whose portion did the father obtain the ring, the robe and the fatted calf? Remember that the Father said, "All that I have is YOURS!" So all those things to celebrate the younger brother's return really belonged to the older son! Just a little food for thought. I'm so thankful that Jesus, our "older brother" freely gives all that He has to celebrate us "prodigals!" Blessings, Mommapbs |

850 | Give me more reference about "Ash Wednes | Jon 3:6 | Mommapbs | 33494
Greetings sonia! Always remember to check the "search feature" on the forum as your question may have already been answered. I have taken the liberty of reprining a previous response here. Also, note the response of the king of Ninevah upon hearing the Word of God. He repented. Although the application of ashes is symbolic of repentence, God alone sees our "broken and contrite hearts!" Blessings, Mommapbs 2 What is Ash Wednesday? Answer Bible general LisaMarie Wed 11/14/01, 3:44pm From NewAdvent.org Ash Wednesday The Wednesday after Quinquagesima Sunday, which is the first day of the Lenten fast. The name dies cinerum (day of ashes) which it bears in the Roman Missal is found in the earliest existing copies of the Gregorian Sacramentary and probably dates from at least the eighth century. On this day all the faithful according to ancient custom are exhorted to approach the altar before the beginning of Mass, and there the priest, dipping his thumb into ashes previously blessed, marks the forehead -- or in case of clerics upon the place of the tonsure -- of each the sign of the cross, saying the words: "Remember man that thou art dust and unto dust thou shalt return." The ashes used in this ceremony are made by burning the remains of the palms blessed on the Palm Sunday of the previous year. In the blessing of the ashes four prayers are used, all of them ancient. The ashes are sprinkled with holy water and fumigated with incense. The celebrant himself, be he bishop or cardinal, receives, either standing or seated, the ashes from some other priest, usually the highest in dignity of those present. In earlier ages a penitential procession often followed the rite of the distribution of the ashes, but this is not now prescribed. There can be no doubt that the custom of distributing the ashes to all the faithful arose from a devotional imitation of the practice observed in the case of public penitents. But this devotional usage, the reception of a sacramental which is full of the symbolism of penance (cf. the corcontritum quasi cinis of the "Dies Irae") is of earlier date than was formerly supposed. It is mentioned as of general observance for both clerics and faithful in the Synod of Beneventum, 1091 (Mansi, XX, 739), but nearly a hundred years earlier than this the Anglo-Saxon homilist Ælfric assumes that it applies to all classes of men. "We read", he says, in the books both in the Old Law and in the New that the men who repented of their sins bestrewed themselves with ashes and clothed their bodies with sackcloth. Now let us do this little at the beginning of our Lent that we strew ashes upon our heads to signify that we ought to repent of our sins during the Lenten fast. And then he enforces this recommendation by the terrible example of a man who refused to go to church for the ashes on Ash Wednesday and who a few days after was accidentally killed in a boar hunt (Ælfric, Lives of Saints, ed. Skeat, I, 262-266). It is possible that the notion of penance which was suggested by the rite of Ash Wednesday was was reinforced by the figurative exclusion from the sacred mysteries symbolized by the hanging of the Lenten veil before the sanctuary. But on this and the practice of beginning the fast on Ash Wednesday see LENT. |

851 | meaning of hunger and thirst | Matt 5:6 | Mommapbs | 33435
As triune beings, created in the image of God, we have spiritual as well as physical needs. These are readily recognized and responded to, however, if we try to meet these needs apart from God, we will continue to "come up empty!" Jesus is called the bread of life, the living water and the righteousness of God. Only He can satisfy the needs of the human soul. Choose carefully from the menu of life! 852 | how we ofend others with our mouths | James 3:3 | Mommapbs | 33434
Greetings! As one who has misused words all too frequently, I offer this in response. The mouth is like a water pitcher. Out of it can come healing or wounding words. And just as a bit in the horse's mouth affects the whole horse, so do our words affect another. The words we utter also reflect the heart that conceives them! We all have a choice when we speak - but even unspoken words can still hurt.(Check out Proverbs 25:11!) "When you look at the scars left by the past, what do you remember - the wounding or the healing?" (pbs 8/00) Blessings, Mommapbs |

853 | The differnece between Hell and Hades? | Rev 20:14 | Mommapbs | 32127
Do a "quick search" on hell and hades and you will find some excellent answers! The "second death" is the reality of "hell" that we should be concerned about as believers. ". . . it is appointed for man to die once and then comes judgment" (Hebrews 9:27) This judgment will be according to the records in Heaven, "And if anyone's name was not found written in the book of life, he was thrown into the lake of fire." Rev 20:15 The "second death" is eternal separation from God! How unimaginable, and horrifying - the very thought of this neverending fate awaiting those who reject Jesus should serve as an instrument of encouragement to the believer who is charged with spreading the good news of God's Grace while it is still "today!" Blessings! Mommapbs |

854 | after the rapture does the holy spirit | Bible general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 32123
Greetings Ms.Linda! The Holy Spirit is the desposit that guarantees the believer eternal life; the Holy Spirit is the means by which individuals are drawn to the Savior. The Holy Spirit is the power that enables the believer, convicts of sin, guides, comforts, etc. Ephesians 4:30 tells us that believers are "sealed" unto redemption. In Revelation 7, we read about 144,000 Jews also being "sealed." These will be the witnesses of the tribulation period. As a result of their testimony, many will turn to the Lord during this great time of jugdement upon the earth yet most will die a martyr's death. If these things are to occur, how could the Holy Spirit NOT be present? The "rapture" of the church signifies the end of the "age of Grace," not the end of the work of the Holy Spirit on earth. Blessings and Romans 8:35-39! Mommapbs |

Greetings Elaine! I am also a relative newcomer. As you read the postings, you will get a flavor for various "theologies" that are represented by Forum participants. Some are scholars, some Pastors, others are lay people like myself. It is wonderful when authors complete the personal profile section so that we can learn a little more about one another and "where we are coming from" in our spiritual walk. Personally, I have found great wisdom and insight into areas of God's Word I had not considered. I hope you will enjoy your time here and continue to ask questions! 857 | Further understanding of betrothal? | Matt 1:24 | Mommapbs | 31213
Greetings! I'm going to take a "common sense" stab at this one! Regardless of how "righteous" we assume others to be, there are no guarantees without proof. God provided this in the statement "he had no union with her until she gave birth to a son." Here's what I think the "proof was!" Although Scripture does not give the details, we could safely assume that Mary had at least a midwife in attendence at the birth of Jesus. Remember Bethlehem was full of people at the time, so it is very probable that there were other women available to assist this first-time mother! It would be physically obvious to Mary's birth attendents that she was a virgin. |

860 | The church responsible for heinous acts? | Rom 14:11 | Mommapbs | 31193
Rom 14:12 "So then each one of us will give an account of himself to God" Vanagon: religions are not responsible for the heinous acts of history or today. Neither can we blame "churches." God's Word tells us that individuals are responsible and held accountable for their actions, good or bad. In a concert, instruments playing in unison have a "common voice" and the melody is easily identified. So it is with wicked hearts! When they unite, the results will also be easily recognized. But each heart has choice in this "concert" - to play or not! Why are you are focusing your attention on these things? God is in charge of judgement! Nothing escapes the eyes of God, all will have to give an account to HIM! It is a dreadful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. (Hebrews 10:31) We learn in Genesis: "Then the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually." (Genesis 6:5) God's response to the wickedness of man was The Flood. This should serve as a warning! However, the Flood was only a "blip" on the radar screen when it is compared to the wrath of God that will be poured out against all wickedness during the Great Tribulation. (see The Revelation for a detailed description!) |
