743 | 1 Peter 3:19-20. What does it mean? | 2 Pet 2:4 | Mommapbs | 49879
Greetings Debbie F. Evan D. Baltz in his message entitled “The Ultimate Victory” states: “Christ made proclamation. This word means, to publish or proclaim openly: something which has been done. It does not connote the message that is proclaimed. Often, the herald of the King would stand up and proclaim to the kingdom the nations victory in battle. The context must determine the message which is declared. What is the main point? Victory in suffering--Christ is the example. Peter is talking about Christ's victory over death. That is the context, therefore that is the message. Christ proclaimed his victory over death--and much more as we shall see. All right, to whom did he make this announcement? The text says, "the spirits now in prison." Okay if that isn't dead people who is it then? When the bible uses the word spirit, and is referring to a human's spirit, it is always qualified as such. Always. Here there is no such qualification. In fact this term is set in opposition to the word "persons" mentioned in verse 20. When the Bible speaks of spirits it is talking about angels. Now there are different kind of angels. There are elect and fallen. Of the fallen there are bound and unbound. Of the bound there are two kinds, permanently bound and temporarily bound. Permanently bound angels are said to exist in prison. Peter's readers must have known who and what he was talking about because he doesn't go into further explanation. Look at 2 Peter 2:4-6 where he mentions similar such ideas as are found here in 3:18-22. "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but sent them to hell, putting them into gloomy dungeons to be held for judgment; 5 if he did not spare the ancient world when he brought the flood on its ungodly people, but protected Noah, a preacher of righteousness, and seven others; 6 if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;" These are events from Genesis. Events that were common knowledge to his readers.” You can read the entire text at www.ccel.org go to the study bible section and input 1 Peter, then go to chapter 3 for the complete sermon and other study materials. May God bless you as you seek to know Him through His Word! Mommapbs |

744 | How did the 11 choose? | Prov 16:33 | Mommapbs | 49856
The practice of "casting lots" was used to determine the Lord's will. It's validity is based upon the sovereignty of God as expressed in Proverbs 16:33. We see that the disciples chose to trust the Lord regarding this important decision. They wanted the Lord to choose who would replace Judas. "So they put forward two men, Joseph called Barsabbas (who was also called Justus), and Matthias. And they prayed and said, 'You, Lord, who know the hearts of all men, show which one of these two You have chosen to occupy this ministry and apostleship from which Judas turned aside to go to his own place'. And they drew lots for them, and the lot fell to Matthias; and he was added to the eleven apostles." Acts 1:23-26 Do you think we should continue this practice today? |

745 | trapped in marriage | Bible general Archive 1 | Mommapbs | 49793
humbled2serve - this is a post from Hank which I believe is intended to you. I have been following the thread and this post was misdirected. Mommapbs Hank writes: Love is not an option for Christians. It is a divine command. As for marriage, Paul commanded husbands to love their wives (Eph.5:25), and wives to submit to their husbands, as to the Lord (Eph.5:22). The command to love applies to both genders, inside and outside of marriage. The Lord never commands that which we, with His assistance, cannot do. Pray and ask the Lord to help you love your husband. The kind of love that keeps a marriage alive and well is far more enduring than romantic love or sexual attraction. I know whereof I speak, having been married to one woman for more than 42 years. --Hank |

746 | Should I tell him I'm sorry? | Matt 18:15 | Mommapbs | 49786
Greetings remodeled! Your "friend" was out of line here. If you offended someone, the one you offended SHOULD have come to you to express his hurt. Your friend usurped the responsibility of the "injured" party and is now part of the problem, rather than the solution! My advice, first KNOW the Scriptures. Do familiarize yourself with 1 John and type in "love one another" in the Bible Word search field for lots of Scriptures on this topic. It is always better to say, "The Bible says" rather than to challenge another's knowledge and understanding of God's Word. Public confrontation is contrary to Matthew 18:15, so how ever you choose to resolve your differences with BOTH individuals, do it privately. It seems to me that a misunderstanding has taken place here and I believe it can be easily rememdied with a dose of Godly love and forgiveness. "Love covers a multitude of sins." 1 Peter 4:8 It may be hard to swallow pride, but it's never wrong to do the right thing! Blessings, Mommapbs |

"Now I ask you, lady, not as though I were writing to you a new commandment, but the one which we have had from the beginning, that we love one another." 2 John 1:5 Greetings again humbled2serve! Thank you for your elaboration and confession of your situation. I can fully appreciate where you are for I was in a similar place MANY years ago - yet I remember it as if it was yesterday . . . It was a beautiful fall day, I was surrounded by three loving children in a comfortable home and yet I was so unhappy - Although I could conjure up reasons for not loving my husband, I knew that this was NOT God's way. I remember sitting in our dining room, looking out the window and crying to God, "I don't love him, I want out of this marriage! But God, I want to obey You most of all. So, dear Heavenly Father, I will CHOOSE to love this man You have given to me because YOU have said,'Love one another.' I will do this in obedience and out of my love for You alone." I literally had CHOSEN to love my husband "in the Lord." (THY will not my will!) And then I got bolder and asked, "Lord, I have chosen to love him, no matter what, but could you please restore my FEELINGS of love for him?" And over the course of time, He did! My feelings returned for my husband and although there are plenty of storms in our marriage, God has honored my obedience and I have never lost my love for this man since that day. May this be a source of encouragement to you to CHOOSE to obey God, rather than follow your heart. Leave the results of your obedience up to Him. Only He is trustworthy to right every wrong and restore a God-honoring love to your relationship. Blessings from my heart to yours, Mommapbs |

748 | references on obtaining peace | 2 Cor 13:11 | Mommapbs | 49772
Greetings humbled2serve! I find that when I get to the "end of my rope" it is best to let go of it, reach out and grab hold of the Lord's outstretched hand! Jesus said: "Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid." John 14:27 The Lord gives us the marraige relationship to teach us about Himself - He is the perfect partner - how far short we fall from Him Holy standard with one another. A good marriage depends upon not only mutual love, but trust as well. With Jesus at the center of your (marital) realtionship there CAN be unity and therefore there CAN be peace - HIS PEACE! Ephesians 4:32 instructs us to "Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you." Forgiveness is the harbinger of peace. Remember, the strongest prison bars are made of unforgiveness. Are you living in the freedom that Jesus offers? I hope these verses give you some assurance of His presence in your situation! Blessings, Mommapbs |

749 | which nation actually resembles God? | Gen 2:7 | Mommapbs | 49738
Greetings aurrance. Your questions prompt a bit of concern. Please don't try to make God fit YOUR ideas about Him - He alone reveals Himself as He IS! The Hebrew for man is pronounced aw-dawm, from which Adam is derived. It's also related to aw-dawm-ah, which means red earth, or red clay - indicating the natural earth elements that composed Adam's body, and the body of every human being since. Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; Gen 1:26 Although man was made in the "image of God," this does NOT mean than man resembles God! How do we know what skin color Jesus had? Does anyone have a picture of Him? All we know from Scripture is: "He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him." Isa 53:2 As far as "colors" are concerned; God is color-blind. He loves everyone equally. (He would even love us if we were multicolored polka-dots!) God does not show favoritism but accepts men from every nation who fear him and do what is right. Acts 10:34-35 God is not blind to sin -we are all stained by this pigment! Perhaps this is the only "color" we should all recognize, for THIS is what separates us from our Holy God. As you "help others" be sure to use the Bible - it is the "last word" on everything! Blessings, Mommapbs |

750 | No Spiritual Gifts? | Acts | Mommapbs | 49691
Greetings pcooper! This is an edited version of my original response of 5-21-02 to the post you have referenced: For most of my life I was taught to believe just what Grace and Truth has written: "The means for the reception of spiritual gifts in the Christian age are not operative today. Gifts, in the first century, were bestowed by means of Holy Spirit baptism (Acts 2; 10), and through the laying on of the apostles1 hands (Acts 8:17, 18; 19:6; ” Tim. 1:6). Since there is no Holy Spirit baptism today (Eph. 4:5; Mt. 28:19, 20), and as there are no living apostles, it is obvious that, so far as biblical evidence is concerned, no spiritual gifts are being given to believers today." THANKFULLY, God was not limited by what I had chosen to believe about Him. He had to overtly "knock my socks off" (this got my attention!) several times before I could finally admit that I had been foolish to put up with the traditional teaching of men rather than depending upon the teaching of the Holy Spirit on the matter of spiritual gifts. Because I had refused to believe that God could no longer speak, except through His Word, I denied myself the privilege of hearing His voice and allowed doubt to reign. BIG MISTAKE! Those who profess to believe in the cessation of the gifts of the Holy Spirit have chosen to put God in a box - in reality, they are defining who THEIR God is and do not allow HIM to do the defining for THEM! (I think this falls into the category of "Thou shalt have no other gods before ME!") The spiritual gifts are alive and well today. "You do not have because you do not ask. You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures." James 4:2-3 In Christ's love, Mommapbs |

751 | What's the "real" purpose of "tongues"? | 1 Cor 14:22 | Mommapbs | 49648
One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself; . . . When you assemble, each one has a psalm, has a teaching, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification. 1 Cor 14: 5, 26 Greetings in Jesus! This topic has been discussed at length on the Forum - use the search feature to read through the posts! Scripture points to three purposes for "tongues". 1. As a sign for unbelievers (v.22) 2. Edification of the individual believer (v.5) 3. Edification of the church (v.26) Let's keep our interest in the spiritual gifts as God has purposed and esteem one another's giftedness as a means to enable the whole body to become mature, unified in the love of Jesus. Blessings in Jesus! Mommapbs |

752 | where did the mosaic laws come from? | 2 Chr 34:14 | Mommapbs | 49635
The "Mosaic Law" was given by the Lord to Moses. These were not "man made" laws, decrees and ordinances. Adherence to them would result in blessing for the nation of Israel. As declared in 2 Chron 33:8 - "I will not again make the feet of the Israelites leave the land I assigned to your forefathers, if only they will be careful to do everything I commanded them concerning all the laws, decrees and ordinances given through Moses." This being the case,is it any wonder that they are in such a state today?! Jesus came to fulfill the law's requirements ONCE and for ALL! Yet to date, Israel has refused to accept the gracious salvation of the Lord! Soon, their eyes will be opened and the Lord will rescue His people - praise His name! Do continue to pray for the peace of Jerusalem! Pray for the peace of Jerusalem:"May those who love you be secure. Psalm 122:6 Blessings, Mommapbs |

753 | Healing powers of the false prophets? | Matt 7:22 | Mommapbs | 49633
Greetings www! You wrote:"I worry about many preachers, men of God, faith healers, etc. who have really come to believe they are anointed by the Lord and in fact may not be. That's a kind of fear that any Christian should be afraid. Any comments." Please read the following Scriptures: Therefore judge nothing before the appointed time; wait till the Lord comes. He will bring to light what is hidden in darkness and will expose the motives of men's hearts. At that time each will receive his praise from God. 1 Cor 4:5 It is written:'As surely as I live,' says the Lord, 'every knee will bow before me; every tongue will confess to God.' So then, each of us will give an account of himself to God. Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way. Romans 14:11-13 For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God's sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of him to whom we must give account. Hebrews 4:12-14 Don't "worry" about THEM - just be sure that YOUR motives are pure and God-honoring! You don't have to give an account or answer to God for THEM, but you will have to give an account of what YOU have chosen! God's Word assures us that God will give each man according to what his deeds deserve. "I the Lord search the heart and examine the mind, to reward a man according to his conduct, according to what his deeds deserve." Jer 17:10 And for those who lead others astray - woe unto them! Jesus said to his disciples: "Things that cause people to sin are bound to come, but woe to that person through whom they come. It would be better for him to be thrown into the sea with a millstone tied around his neck than for him to cause one of these little ones to sin. So watch yourselves. If your brother sins, rebuke him, and if he repents, forgive him." Luke 17:1-3 I hope these words encourage your walk with the Lord, may He find YOU faithful at His appearing! Blessings in Jesus! Mommapbs |

755 | Apostle, or Disciple? | Luke 6:13 | Mommapbs | 49202
Greetings Timothy Paul! Some expansion of Aspiring Overseer's post to you . . . See Acts 1:21-16 re: the selection of the Apostle to replace Judas. The defining characteristic of an apostle (also reaffirmed by Paul - see 1 Cor 15:4-9)is that an apostle must be an eye witness to the resurrected Christ. The selection of Matthias can also be seen as "hand picked" by Christ as referenced to the following Scripture: "The lot is cast into the lap, But its every decision is from the LORD." Prov 16:33 Mommapbs |

757 | how do we know that verse is accurate? | 2 Tim 3:16 | Mommapbs | 49161
1 Chr 28:9 "As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the LORD searches all hearts, and understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him, He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever." Bravostarr - This is a very sobering verse. Please read it and decide if you REALLY DESIRE to KNOW the TRUTH. Truth is a person. Jesus said to him, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me. John 14:6 "In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God." Read John 1. Jesus is the Word. Bottom line is this, either you accept God's Word as TRUTH or you reject it. It's your decision; choose carefully. In Christ's love, Mommapbs |

758 | how accurate is prophecy and fulfillment | Deut 18:22 | Mommapbs | 49160
Greetings bravostarr! God said to Jacob (Israel),"Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land; for I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you." Gen 28:15 Every prophecy that the LORD has given has or will be fulfilled! Because of this, we can look at the days we are living in with confidence and expectation that God will indeed keep His promises to Israel and to us as His Church as welll! Recall Jesus in the temple when he declared that what was written by the prophet Isaiah was fulfilled. He didn't shape anything; He WAS what God had promised. See Luke 4:18-21 Jesus has told us in Mt 24 what will take place prior to His return - how can we "shape" this? Mommapbs |

760 | How could Jonathan find David? | 1 Sam 23:16 | Mommapbs | 49093
Greetings Searcher! I hope I have been a Jonathan to others! The purpose of this note is to testify about a "Jonathan" in my life. "For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways," declares the LORD. Isa 55:8 During a time of crisis in my life I THOUGHT that my church would rally around and support me. This was the way I expected God to provide for me. It did not happen (surprise, surprise!) And how did I respond? Sadly, I must admit I was angry and bitter. It was my non-Christian friends who reached out in lovingkindness and met my physical and emotional needs. But my spirit was still starving. "Where was God in this?" I railed! I missed the "Jonathan" God had sent because of the unrealized expectations I had placed upon God to do what I THOUGHT He should do; I THOUGHT I knew HOW HE should accomplish this too! "Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied." Mt 5:6 Finally,I came to realize that God HAD provided for me! I admitted my foolish and arrogant pride to Him in thinking that I could direct HOW God COULD or SHOULD act toward me! I was looking for MY "Jonathan" instead of God's. Now for those who would challenge God's usage of non-believers to meet my needs . . . recall that the provisions the Israelites used to construct the tabernacle were from the riches that were lavished upon them when they escaped from Egypt! (Ex 12:35-36) "The king's heart is like channels of water in the hand of the LORD;He turns it wherever He wishes. Proverbs 21:1 For a time, I missed out on the blessing of knowing and recognizing God's love for me because I was looking for it on my own and in my own way. God promises: Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go." Josh 1:9 Dear friends, don't try to "second guess" the Lord. Oh how He loves you and delights in you - you are precious to Him; He longs to see you respond to His love. Don't limit the blessing of receiving His love by defining where it CAN be - look around, His hand is everywhere! I trust that He will bless you with the peace of His presence where you are today in your walk with Him! In the love of Jesus, Mommapbs |
