Hello Doc, I would like to add my 2 cents also. "I've scanned the book at Wal-Mart. I guess I might have had some bias against it right there. Books on theology sold at Wal-Mart are generally the first indication that you aren't looking at something terribly deep." You are right that this book is not terribly deep, but the bible is deep in many areas. We have used this book for bible study at our church. There really is no great problem when it is taught as prescribed. The same problems that we see in this book also mostly apply to "poor" bible study. The book is meant as a an aid to one particular bible subject; God's purpose for our lives as individuals. The bible is the only book that is meant to be studied prayerfully with the aid of the Holy Spirit to teach us God's meaning and God's understanding. That is why the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge and wisdom. When the “scriptures” that Rick Warren cites (and there are many) are studied correctly, I see very little problems with this book. We need to always keep the focus on the scriptures when studying any book. If we teach correctly as Phillip did by the leading of the Holy Spirit for the Ethiopian Eunuch, then we can all help disciple others for Christ. Your brother in Christ, Pastor Glenn |

"This is encouraging, Pastor. I meant no disrespect to anyone who has read this book or has used it. I was just expressing my general observations and impressions -- though flawed and humble they may be!" Hello again Doc, I do not feel disrespected at all by your comments. As a matter of fact, my own dear mother also objected to us using this book or any other in bible study. She said, "These sixty-six books are all we need". She was right to a certain extent; we need to know how to teach the bible first and formost. So I made the same speech to her as I did to you in my last post. Let me tell you about my Mother Glenn. Well, my mother at 82 years young is forgetful and often forgets the names of her 9 children. So during bible study, every few minutes she would ask "What is this book? (The Purpose Driven Life)" or "What scripture are we studying?". So, I had to repeat my same speech about 5 times each week. However, even with her forgetfulness, she does not forget the scriptures and can more than hold her own in any bible study lesson. Whenever I should point out to her that the Lord has really blessed her memory when it comes to bible knowledge and understanding, she will then name all the books one by one and end with "... sixty-six books, thats all we need". So, she is right and you are right. If we don't know how to teach the bible "first", then no other books are going to help. Your brother in Christ, Pastor Glenn |

83 | Studying O.T. is creating problems. | Genesis | Pastor Glenn | 84899
FreeThinker, I wanted to point out the vast time of 100 years between God's instructions of Gen 6 and Gen 7. Gen 5 32And Noah was five hundred years old, and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth. But it was only 7 days before the flood that God gave detailed instructions. Gen 7 6Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters were on the earth. This shows the poor judgement of the skeptics that see this as a contradiction. It should be expected that more detail be given a century later as the end was upon them. I am not looking for your reponse to this post as much as I am looking forward to your response to the book suggested by Mommapbs. I also wanted to suggest listening to a Real Player message from a former skeptic at the following link: http://www.johnankerberg.org/RealMedia/ja20000528-rd1.ram This site is also a very good resource for many bible questions: http://www.johnankerberg.org Hope this helps, Pastor Glenn |

84 | Studying O.T. is creating problems. | Genesis | Pastor Glenn | 84911
More clean animals were needed for sacrifice so more were saved. God did not say "ONLY" two, that would have indeed been a contradiction. "Two" is included in "seven", so this is not at all a contradiction. Gen 7 2You shall take with you seven each of every clean animal, a male and his female; two each of animals that are unclean, a male and his female; 3also seven each of birds of the air, male and female, to keep the species alive on the face of all the earth. Gen 8 20 Then Noah built an altar to the LORD, and took of every clean animal and of every clean bird, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. The question of who bought the field is not a problem either. It is well understood how others can perform tasks for someone else acting as their agent, especially if they are disabled or dead. Mat 27 5Then he threw down the pieces of silver in the temple and departed, and went and hanged himself. 6But the chief priests took the silver pieces and said, "It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, because they are the price of blood." 7And they consulted together and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in. 8Therefore that field has been called the Field of Blood to this day. 9Then was fulfilled what was spoken by Jeremiah the prophet, saying, "And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the value of Him who was priced, whom they of the children of Israel priced, 10and gave them for the potter's field, as the LORD directed me."[Jeremiah 32:6-9] Acts 1 16"Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus; 17for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry." 18(Now this man purchased a field with the wages of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst open in the middle and all his entrails gushed out. 19And it became known to all those dwelling in Jerusalem; so that field is called in their own language, Akel Dama, that is, Field of Blood.) 20"For it is written in the Book of Psalms: "Let his dwelling place be desolate, And let no one live in it';[Psalm 69:25] The question is really of whoses name went on the deed to the property. Who would doubt that it was Judas' name on the deed. Pastor Glenn |

85 | please explain proberbs 18:21 | Gen 1:1 | Pastor Glenn | 145259
Hello Deont, Prov 18 21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, And those who love it will eat its fruit. (NKJV) Every word that we speak is being recorded for court (Judgement Day): Matthew 12:36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. "what you say is what You get" is true only for trusting God (having faith in Him). A good example of this is immediately before the battle of the boy David vs the giant Goliath. The giant "spoke": 1 Samuel 17 44 And the Philistine said to David, "Come to me, and I will give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" But David also "spoke": 45 Then David said to the Philistine, "You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. 46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you and take your head from you. And this day I will give the carcasses of the camp of the Philistines to the birds of the air and the wild beasts of the earth, that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47 Then all this assembly shall know that the LORD does not save with sword and spear; for the battle is the LORD's, and He will give you into our hands." David's words clearly indicated his faith in God. God honoured David's words and faith by giving him the victory. Whereas, the giant's words showed faith in himself. 1 Peter 5:5 [ Submit to God, Resist the Devil ] Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." [ Proverbs 3:34] Pastor Glenn |

Oops!! The phrase "Submit to God, Resist the Devil" does not belong in this scripture. It was a heading that I inadvertantly copied. 1 Peter 5:5 Likewise you younger people, submit yourselves to your elders. Yes, all of you be submissive to one another, and be clothed with humility, for "God resists the proud, But gives grace to the humble." [ Proverbs 3:34] James 4:7 Therefore submit to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. (NKJV) Pastor Glenn |

88 | Do you believe in the one true God? | Gen 1:26 | Pastor Glenn | 65423
zerotheory, Woe, You said, "I think everyone and everything is the eternal Son of God. " Can you tell us more about yourself? What is your religious background? Do you believe that the bible is from the one true God? Do you believe in the one true God of the bible? Since you are still forming your opinion, does that mean that you are very young? Sorry for asking so many questions, but it would help very much so that we know how to respond to your questions. |

89 | Do you believe in the one true God? | Gen 1:26 | Pastor Glenn | 65531
Roger Wilco, Definition of eternal: Being without beginning or end; existing outside of time. There is no such thing as eternal sons (small s) of God. This applies to Jesus Christ Son (big S) of God alone. You said, "Galations 3:26, clearly states we are all "sons of God" through faith in Christ. Romans 8:12-17 elaborates. As Christians, we all hope for eternal life." How do we know that someone has faith in Christ without asking? My questions were not intended to tear anyone down. I clearly stated: "Sorry for asking so many questions, but it would help very much so that we know how to respond to your questions." Pastor Glenn |

90 | attempt to merge philosophy, logic, and? | Gen 1:26 | Pastor Glenn | 65550
Zerotheory, It souds like an attempt to merge philosophy, logic, and science. Science is related only to this physical universe and the present rules of physics. Since God is not bound by the laws of physics, isn't this a hopeless attempt? Also, is Stephen Hawking involved in formulation of this "Zero Theory"? Pastor Glenn |

91 | Creation Account: Mythical or Not? | Gen 1:27 | Pastor Glenn | 85226
Hank, You are expressing very wise reasoning as you expressed the subtle dangers of "mythical" interpretations. You Conclude: "... We cannot know whether there was any such thing as a serpent who beguiled Eve, or that Eve even existed. We have no historical proof of Eden or the fall of Adam and Eve. Without any reliable account of the fall, therefore, the doctrine of original sin falls apart and with it the idea that we need a savior, thus making Christ's death on the cross superfluous. ..... So which is it? The account of creation is real, factual, historical, true -- or it is mythical, allegorical, fictitious. Does it make more sense to take God at His word and to believe that what He says is the way it is, or to invent ways of explaining away the things we don't understand or feel uncomfortable with or just flatly refuse to believe or accept? " I wanted to point out that "details" such as the subtleness of the serpent are easily ignored while using the mindset of a "mythical" Garden of Eden. We need to see the dangers of the subtleness of sin and the unacceptable doubt that a non-literal Garden of Eden story brings also. We are warned of this by many scriptures: Proverbs 7:10 And, behold, there met him a woman with the attire of an harlot, and subtil of heart. Matthew 26:4 And consulted that they might take Jesus by subtilty, and kill him. Acts 7:19 The same dealt subtilly with our kindred, and evil entreated our fathers, so that they cast out their young children, to the end they might not live. Acts 13:10 And said, O full of all subtilty and all mischief, thou child of the devil, thou enemy of all righteousness, wilt thou not cease to pervert the right ways of the Lord? 2 Corinthians 11:3 But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ. 94 | Man left with only one of two choices? | Gen 2:17 | Pastor Glenn | 65054
Man’s Choice: life and death, blessing and cursing From Life to Death Man was created with two natures, as well as, with two choices. By eating of the forbidden fruit (or acting on his faith), he chose to put his faith and trust in himself. His spiritual nature died immediately and therefore, he was left with only his dying physical nature (caterpillar). Matthew Henry Commentary: Gen 2:17 “Here, (1.) Adam is threatened with death in case of disobedience: Dying thou shalt die, denoting a sure and dreadful sentence, as, in the former part of this covenant, eating thou shalt eat, denotes a free and full grant. (2.) Adam is tried with a positive law, not to eat of the fruit of the tree of knowledge. Now it was very proper to make trial of his obedience by such a command as this, … http://www.biblestudytools.net/Commentaries/MatthewHenryComplete From Death to Life In Jesus Christ, God gives man another chance to put his trust in Him. By choosing Jesus Christ (eating of the body drinking of the blood, or acting on his faith), he may choose to put his faith and trust in God. His spiritual nature is born immediately and therefore, he is left with both a new spiritual nature (butterfly), as well as, his dying physical nature. The spiritual nature (butterfly) is not complete until we are changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye! “John 3:14-21 Christ here discourses of the great design of his own coming into the world, and the happiness of those that believe in him, v. 14–18. Here we have the very marrow and quintessence of the whole gospel, that faithful saying (1 Tim. 1:15), that Jesus Christ came to seek and to save the children of men from death, and recover them to life. Now sinners are dead men upon a twofold account:— (1.) As one that is mortally wounded, or sick of an incurable disease, is said to be a dead man, for he is dying; and so Christ came to save us, by healing us, as the brazen serpent healed the Israelites, v. 14, 15. (2.) As one that is justly condemned to die for an unpardonable crime is a dead man, he is dead in law; and, in reference to this part of our danger, Christ came to save as a prince or judge, publishing an act of indemnity, or general pardon, under certain provisos; this saving here is opposed to condemning, v. 16–18. 4. Christ, in the close, discourses concerning the deplorable condition of those that persist in unbelief and willful ignorance, v. 18–21. (1.) Read here the doom of those that will not believe in Christ: they are condemned already. (2.) Read also the doom of those that would not so much as know him, v. 19. Many inquisitive people had knowledge of Christ and his doctrine and miracles, but they were prejudiced against him, and would not believe in him, while the generality were sottishly careless and stupid, and would not know him. And this is the condemnation, the sin that ruined them, that light is come into the world, and they loved darkness rather. “ http://www.biblestudytools.net/Commentaries/MatthewHenryComplete Joshua 24:15 And if it seems evil to you to serve the LORD, choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the River, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD." Ecclesiastes 12 1 Remember now your Creator in the days of your youth, Before the difficult days come, And the years draw near when you say, "I have no pleasure in them": 5…...For man goes to his eternal home, And the mourners go about the streets. 6Remember your Creator before the silver cord is loosed,[1] Or the golden bowl is broken, Or the pitcher shattered at the fountain, Or the wheel broken at the well. 7Then the dust will return to the earth as it was, And the spirit will return to God who gave it. 8"Vanity of vanities," says the Preacher, "All is vanity." ………13Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is man's all. 14For God will bring every work into judgment, Including every secret thing, Whether good or evil. Deuteronomy 30:19 I call heaven and earth as witnesses today against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing; therefore choose life, that both you and your descendants may live; |

97 | God/Man, Man/Man Relationships | Gen 3:8 | Pastor Glenn | 71664
I agree with David 24597 that the scriptures indicate family relationship that goes even beyond friendship: Matthew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers, For they shall be called sons of God. Romans 9:26 "And it shall come to pass in the place where it was said to them, "You are not My people,' There they shall be called sons of the living God."[Hosea 1:10] Hosea 1 10 "Yet the number of the children of Israel Shall be as the sand of the sea, Which cannot be measured or numbered. And it shall come to pass In the place where it was said to them, "You are not My people,'[1] There it shall be said to them, "You are sons of the living God.' 1 John 3 1 Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God![1] Therefore the world does not know us,[2] because it did not know Him. 2Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure. |

98 | How was Jesus of David's seed/line? | Gen 3:15 | Pastor Glenn | 110961
Jon, Your question is: "How was Jesus of David's seed/line?" Here are scriptures: Luke 1:27 To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. Luke 1:32 He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: Luke 1:69 And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David; Luke 2:4 And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) Luke 2:11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord. Luke 3:31 Which was the son of Melea, which was the son of Menan, which was the son of Mattatha, which was the son of Nathan, which was the son of David, Luke 6:3 And Jesus answering them said, Have ye not read so much as this, what David did, when himself was an hungred, and they which were with him; Luke 18:38 And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me. Luke 18:39 And they which went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried so much the more, Thou son of David, have mercy on me. Are you desputing some or all of these sciptures? Why? Pastor Glenn |

99 | Why didn't God create us without sin? | Gen 3:15 | Pastor Glenn | 146386
Hello bjlamberth, You asked, “Since God is omnipotent and omniscent, why did He allow sin to take over all mankind? “ We are all the offspring of Adam. Adam’s sin condition passes to his seeds (us). Christ became part of our human family tree (this was required). Since Christ is God and He was born of the Holy Spirit, the sin condition did not affect Him. But, if we accept Christ, we have the Remedy for sin. Hebrews 10:10 By the which will we are sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. “Why didn't He make us sinless?” Then that would require a separate death on the cross for each of us. “He could have created us without the abilility to sin, so why didn't He?” Good question. Can we truly love God if we had no free will? If we were to have no ability to sin (choice), then we are a far inferior creation. God created man for His very honourable purposes: Hebrews 2:6 But one testified in a certain place, saying: "What is man that You are mindful of him, Or the son of man that You take care of him? 7 You have made him a little lower than the angels; You have crowned him with glory and honor, And set him over the works of Your hands. 8 You have put all things in subjection under his feet." For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. 9 But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. 10 For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings. 11 For both He who sanctifies and those who are being sanctified are all of one, for which reason He is not ashamed to call them brethren, “And why did He not prevent His angels from taking over (Satan and his angels who fell from grace)? These questions have been asked by my 23 yr. old daughter. She feels that God is just using us as playing pieces in a chess game. “ God is not using us, but He is using Satan and death (our own mortality) to scare us to Christ. That may sound cruel, but wouldn’t it be more cruel to allow us to simply wander further and further away? “I told her that God gave man the will to choose for himself and he chose to sin. God's gift of redemption by giving us His only begotten Son shows His awesome love for us in spite of our freewill to choose to sin. Can you better help me answer her question re: this? “ You gave an excellent answer. 1Ki 18:21 And Elijah came unto all the people, and said, How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him. And the people answered him not a word. Luk 7:41 There was a certain creditor which had two debtors: the one owed five hundred pence, and the other fifty. Luk 7:42 And when they had nothing to pay, he frankly forgave them both. Tell me therefore, which of them will love him most? Luk 7:43 Simon answered and said, I suppose that he, to whom he forgave most. And he said unto him, Thou hast rightly judged. Luk 7:44 And he turned to the woman, and said unto Simon, Seest thou this woman? I entered into thine house, thou gavest me no water for my feet: but she hath washed my feet with tears, and wiped them with the hairs of her head. Luk 7:45 Thou gavest me no kiss: but this woman since the time I came in hath not ceased to kiss my feet. Luk 7:46 My head with oil thou didst not anoint: but this woman hath anointed my feet with ointment. Luk 7:47 Wherefore I say unto thee, Her sins, which are many, are forgiven; for she loved much: but to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little. Your brother in Christ, Pastor Glenn |

100 | Lifespan of Adam in Eden | Gen 3:22 | Pastor Glenn | 71005
pawandavid, The bible does not say. However, Seeing that the tree of life was also in the middle of the garden and that God put them out before they could eat "also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever", it could have been just a matter of only days. Gen 3:22 And the LORD God said, Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil: and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever: It appears that had they chosen the tree of life first, sin would not have entered the world.
