61 | Arguing Among Apostles?? | Gal 2:11 | Inquisitor | 224656
Lionheart, Doc and 108cious, I sincerely appreciate all of your responses; they're all very good points to this rather interesting story. I was trying to go for something much bigger, at least in my humble opinion. Let me explain. I like to use my imagination to try and make these kinds of scenes in the Bible come alive. Now imagine in the Christian world at that time, the big and famous Peter, so called leader of the church in Jerusalem coming to Antioch. Then Paul approaches Peter (hopefully like it's been mentioned), and begins talking about this subject in subdued tones or maybe they talked about it previously. Anyway, it's obvious that Peter has a real problem switching over to this whole new idea of ALL of the full benefits of Christianity being extended to everyone, including Gentiles. And this is true in spite of God's Personal Revelation to Peter in Acts 10. Now we all know that both Peter and Paul are endowed with miraculous knowledge and powers of self control from the Holy Spirit. But it seems the HS is allowing the whole world to find out about this problem. In other words, the HS wanted Peter to find out on his own as he is famously a little bit stubborn about learning things. We know this from his past. Well where else could we could go for a Bible based commentary on this most unusual strategy from the Holy Spirit? Where else does He let the Apostles experience this kind of "learning on their own" and walk on their own? The biggest scene of which I can think is that of the famous letter issued in Acts 15. All of us know the scene pretty well. Paul has brought the situation to the elders in Jerusalem for resolution as he should. Judiazers (sp?) are messing up everything by insisting on Christians being circumcized in order to be truly pleasing to God. This is the first major crisis for these christian leaders to deal with on nation-wide scale. They know what they decide will set a precendent and will be followed for all time. What a powerful opportunity to come up with a gradiose creed, something what they experienced with the famous Law of Moses. And what do these great and noble leaders do? Well first they pray to God for guidance and then after much discussion, they issued a very humble letter with merely four restrictions. You know what they are or you can re-read Acts 15 for a reminder. But my point is, they humbled themselves and minimized this guidance, taking special pains to avoid ALL the business about circumcision. This point I'm making includes the fact the HS allowed us mankind (christians really) to make up our minds about how the church was to proceed and handle these kinds of problems. In other words, they held up these gentlemen (Apostles) with miraculous powers like we hold up our children and then let them learn to walk on their own. God, Jesus and HS were all in this together and let us mankind do our own thing and thanks be to God, these Apostles were humble enough to minimize their spirit and chose solid Godly guidance from centuries past. That's the wonderful point I'm trying to showcase. What a wonderful development: God wants all of us to graduate from His Micro-management as in the OT and see ourselves as mature children of God. He wants us to keep trying our best to imitate His Son and His Lifestyle, His Way of Thinking with "What would Jesus do." Now back to Galatians. Yes indeed Doc and 108cious make a good point. 108cious, I think I finally get the point of your name: It's tenicious...correct? Yes, in Gal 6:1, we are to follow Paul's instruction in correcting our fellow man or christian. We have to assume Paul did follow this procedure with Peter; it's just not recorded as we didn't need to know, according to God. So Peter and most probably ALL the Jewish christians had a very difficult time with this business of allowing Gentiles into the Family of God with ALL the benefits. Much like our country is having difficulties with prejudices in many different quandrants of our nation. Mankind has always had this problem but we're working on it, right? To the best of our ability. AND let's not forget that Paul and Peter are reconciled as brothers. Peter even acknowledges Paul's superior handling of God's Word. 2 Pet 3:14 Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless; 15 and consider that the longsuffering of our Lord is salvation—as also our beloved brother Paul, according to the wisdom given to him, has written to you, 16 as also in all his epistles, speaking in them of these things, in which are some things hard to understand, which untaught and unstable people twist to their own destruction, as they do also the rest of the Scriptures. Well, I appreciate your allowing me to share. God bless, Inquisitor |

62 | Paradise vs. Heaven | John 20:17 | Inquisitor | 224654
We're not given any idea of the details on the actual "places" of Paradise or Hades. It seems pretty clear from the scriptures that they are a "holding pattern" for the souls who have passed on, waiting for the ultimate Judgment Day for all of us. In answer to your second question: Yes, we modern people or christians even might says "we're going to Heaven" after the passing of our lives and ultimately that may be true depending on the Judgment from our Father. But in reality, those that know their Bible should know about this information on Paradise and Hades. On the third question: Personally, I don't believe Paradise or Hades is on earth or is even a physical place. Since we're talking about Lazarus and the rich man AFTER their passing, we're referring to their souls in speaking to Jesus. Thus Paradise and Hades must be a spiritual sort of "place" or really a state of being. That's about all I know on this subject; we'll just have to wait on getting further details. Hope this helps. God bless. Inquisitor |

63 | Paradise vs. Heaven | John 20:17 | Inquisitor | 224634
I would have to choose "Door No 2." As you mention with Luke 16, with Jesus' Parable of Lazarus and the rich man, there is a place called Paradise which apparently seems to be a "holding pattern" between life here on earth and our ultimate Heavenly abode. Hades is the realm of the unfaithful between life on earth and the everlasting place of eternal death, or Hell. Now, remember the Jews didn't have nearly as much information about the hereafter as we do now, thus the controversy between the various sects which Paul used to his advantage. So it was a true fact that the thief went to Paradise WITH Jesus BUT only Jesus graduated right away to be with His Father. Now the big area of debate: Did those who lived and died BEFORE the start of the Lord's church. Did they go to their form of Heaven? Seems implied by all the raising spirits at that time. But who can know for certain? Matt 27:51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many. |

Your Point 5 is a very interesting one: Gal 6:1 Brethren, even if anyone is caught in any trespass, you who are spiritual, restore such a one in a spirit of gentleness; each one looking to yourself, so that you too will not be tempted. Can you infer any further major points for our benefit in today's world? God's blessings to you, Inquisitor |

Doc, I can only agree with your statement with another quote from God's Word. 1 Tim 6:3 If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which accords with Godliness, 4 he is proud, knowing nothing, but is obsessed with disputes and arguments over words, from which come envy, strife, reviling, evil suspicions, 5 useless wranglings of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who suppose that godliness is a means of gain. From such withdraw yourself. Hopefully, you did see my most recent post to Beja but in case you missed it... I'm completely ready to close this thread. God's blessings to you, Inquisitor |

66 | What kind of sins would be "against you" | NT general | Inquisitor | 224590
Jesus' parables were filled with examples of people doing wrong to others. The most powerful one to come to my mind is that of the Good Samaritan. But it is also helpful to remember that Jerusalem in the 1st century was a very modern city and people were carrying on business deals all the time. And of course, the Jews were famous for being shrewd with their negotiations. Also remember, Jesus harshly rebuked the Scribes and Pharisees for adding to God's Word all their traditions which He and His disciples didn't hesitate to violate. But I can imagine many such argumenta between all the various Jews about these differences. So Jesus was referring to the whole grand list of wrongs that were being perpetrated on everyone. To me, it all boils down to intent. If a person knows he's deceiving someone then it's obvious to those that find out later that's a sin and of course it's well know immediately to God. |

Quoted from Beja: So let me offer this. I agree that we should not say mean things to each other, and I agree that we should exclusively follow the teachings of scripture and not those of any man who is teaching something contrary. I think I can live with that. Thanks for your patience. And as always, God's blessings on you, Inquisitor |

Beja, I too believe in being a philosopher and discuss Bible all day long. But I'm thinking the scriptures (and History) I provided proves that people don't like labels when we're encouraged by God to wear His name and show His Word through our lives. I noticed your post didn't really address any of the scriptures as referenced in my post. How can one argue against them? Jesus says we're either for Him or against Him... Luke 11:23 He who is not with Me is against Me, and he who does not gather with Me scatters. Yes, as I mentioned above I too am a philosopher but I'm thinking we should only pilosophize (sp?) on those items as optional in the Bible. There are a few things in the NT (much fewer than in the OT) that should not be up for debate. As I understand these verses, our Lord doesn't like to see name-calling used in any regard, especially when we re-read the 1 Corinthian letter. We should not place an undue amount of value on any one person's opinion (including mine BTW) but instead Christ is to get ALL the preeminence. Colossians 1:18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence. I can imagine since you've argued so passionately for your position that you're not going to change your way of thinking, at least not easily. I'm just hoping to give you some "food for thought," hopefully from the Lord. God bless you, Inquisitor |

70 | Harsh Treatment? | Bible general Archive 4 | Inquisitor | 224580
Beja, My only response would be from God's Word: Rev 2:5 Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent. 6 But this you have, that you hate the deeds of the Nicolaitans, which I also hate. From this passage, we learn about a group of people who apparently were in violation to God's Will and His Word. I don't know the details but it's sufficient the name was most certainly not complimentary. Rev 2:19 “I know your works, love, service, faith, and your patience; and as for your works, the last are more than the first. 20 Nevertheless I have a few things against you, because you allow that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, to teach and seduce My servants to commit sexual immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols. 21 And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent. Another report of christians following another person in conflict with God's Word. Nuff said. 1 Cor 1:11 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe’s household, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now I say this, that each of you says, “I am of Paul,” or “I am of Apollos,” or “I am of Cephas,” or “I am of Christ.” 13 Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 14 I thank God that I baptized none of you except Crispus and Gaius, 15 lest anyone should say that I had baptized in my own name. This passage indicates Paul's own regret in baptizing. What a shameful condition to take place in the Lord's church. 1 Tim 1:18 This charge I commit to you, son Timothy, according to the prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, 19 having faith and a good conscience, which some having rejected, concerning the faith have suffered shipwreck, 20 of whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I delivered to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme. Well I think I could come up with other examples, including those from the OT but I think you get my point. When one gives his life and everything he hopes be to the Lord, sacrificing his all, it's a natural thing for such a child of God to be a little sensitive to this thing as name-calling. Sure we are to take such ridicule and abuse from the world but when a christian comes to this Forum dedicated to Bible study by christians and for christians to use to build up the Lord's church, we naturally think we won't be stuck with labels other than simply christians. I think the scriptures above and all the other examples from the Bible clearly support this position but that of course is just my opinion. What do you think? Still wishing God's richest blessings on you, Inquisitor |

71 | Arguing Among Apostles?? | Gal 2:11 | Inquisitor | 224578
I was just doing my daily reading and came across some rather harsh words from one Apostle to another. It seems curious the Holy Spirit allowed to Peter to make this mistake, especially after his special revelation in Acts 10. Is God trying to proclaim something special by allowing such a confrontation to become known throughout the Christian world? Notice Paul's buddy, Barnabas even gets swirled into this controversy. What's the Lord's ultimate purpose in telling this story? Yes, this is a repeat of my previous post. Since I wasn't getting any responses, I thought I would repost since I finally learned how to post a question properly. Do forgive and tell me what you think. I'm quoting the whole story from Paul for your reference. Gal 2:11 Now when Peter had come to Antioch, I withstood him to his face, because he was to be blamed; 12 for before certain men came from James, he would eat with the Gentiles; but when they came, he withdrew and separated himself, fearing those who were of the circumcision. 13 And the rest of the Jews also played the hypocrite with him, so that even Barnabas was carried away with their hypocrisy. 14 But when I saw that they were not straightforward about the truth of the gospel, I said to Peter before them all, “If you, being a Jew, live in the manner of Gentiles and not as the Jews, why do you compel Gentiles to live as Jews? 15 We who are Jews by nature, and not sinners of the Gentiles, 16 knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law but by faith in Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, that we might be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the law; for by the works of the law no flesh shall be justified. BradK, I'm acknowledging that you, Beja and Searcher have all made good points about the weaknesses of mankind over the centuries. When I looked up Campbellite in Wikapedia, it mentioned that this custom was started much in the same way the folks who followed Martin Luther's teachings were called Lutherans. They didn't like it and Mr. Luther certainly didn't like it. He fought hard to stop it. What he wanted was and is what all God's people want. We all want the church on a universal, world-wide scale is to go back to the Bible for simple guidance, nothing more and nothing less. That's what I want and what I earnestly seek after. In a more calm mood now, I can only conclude maybe it would be better to refer to people who follow Mr. Campbell as believers in Campbellism like Calvinism, etc. As mentioned Christian groups all think they're following God's Word and interpreting God's Word to the very best they possibly can. And in spite of this and the Lord's prayer for unity and like mindedness, we still disagree on so many, many differences, thus the different names and denominations. It is truly sad to me as a humble child of God that we can't agree on these Bible basic truths but that's been the plight of mankind since the beginning. We can only try to adhere to Jesus' adminotions and resolve to minimize our spirits in this regard and instead put our focus on the Lord like Peter did on the water. I certainly didn't want to raise a big fuss on this topic. I was just hoping to raise our standards of behavior and thinking to those of our Lord's. I sincerely thank you for your responses. It's been enlightening. God's blessings on you all and the whole Forum, Inquisitor |

The easiest response would be to look up the number of posts on this Forum referencing the name of derision "Campbellites." I looked up this controversy as it refers to Alexander Campbell who was a famous (apparently well earned) debater during the Restoration Period of Christianity. I understand his debates to this date are considered classics in the logical use of God's Word, reminding one of Paul's Letter to the Romans. Of course Campbell was not inspired but it is great that we have such a rich history of Godly men in the recent past. Hope this helps and God's blessings in your studies, Inquisitor. |

But it's still quite a quandry to me. These people, at least most of the ones I've seen here on the Forum ask sincere questions based on scripture and most of the time, all they get in response is name-calling. Is there any justification for this kind of behavior? |

77 | did jesus keep the law | NT general | Inquisitor | 224564
Along with the other good responses, I have to say this. Jesus complied with and fulfilled, as a living testimony the most important laws as He stated in Mk 12:28 Then one of the scribes came, and having heard them reasoning together, perceiving that He had answered them well, asked Him, “Which is the first commandment of all?” 29 Jesus answered him, “The first of all the commandments is: ‘Hear, O Israel, the LORD our God, the LORD is one. 30 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. 31 And the second, like it, is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” 32 So the scribe said to Him, “Well said, Teacher. You have spoken the truth, for there is one God, and there is no other but He. 33 And to love Him with all the heart, with all the understanding, with all the soul, and with all the strength, and to love one’s neighbor as oneself, is more than all the whole burnt offerings and sacrifices.” Notice these two basic laws were from Deut 6 and Lev 19 but most importantly our Lord said that all the rest of the Law of Moses hinges on these two. We all know Jesus was the very embodiment of Love, Mercy and Compassion to all people and He was in Perfect sync with His Father. So yes indeed He did a great job of keeping the Law as set by His Father. He did NOT do a very good job of adhering to the traditions of men because they interfered with His Love for people. |
