101 | what is the meaning of supplications | Phil 2:1 | Inquisitor | 223410
From the Wikapedia: Supplication (also known as petitioning) is the most common form of prayer, wherein a person asks a supernatural deity to provide something, either for the person who is praying or for someone else on whose behalf a prayer of supplication is being made, also known as intercession. The concept of supplication is also perfectly at home in a secular context. The supplicant may also be described as a suppliant but the former word is more commonly used. The key meaning is of a request by the lesser person in an acknowledged unequal relationship. For example, supplication is the final stage of thesis submission at Oxford University. Supplication is also closely associated with the secular notion of appeasement. In Christianity, the prayer of supplication for health by and on behalf of the sick is referenced in early Christian writings in the New Testament, especially James 5:13-16. One example of supplication is the Catholic ritual of novena (from novem, the Latin word for "nine") wherein one repeatedly asks for the same favor over a period of nine days. This ritual began in Spain during the Middle Ages when a nine-day period of hymns and prayers led up to a Christmas feast, a period which ended with gift giving. A contemporary Christian example of supplication is the practice of the Daily Prayer for Peace by the Community of Christ where a member prays for peace each day at a specified time. Philippians 4:6 says, "Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God." One of the most famous passage from the Bible: 1 Thes 5:14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always, 17 PRAY WITHOUT CEASING, 18 in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. NOTE: The Caps above are mine for emphasis. Paul is just encouraging us as God's children to have our minds constantly in the mode of prayer so as to resist the Devil and keep ourselves pure from the world. Of course it's impossible for us to literally pray 100 percent of our time but we should at least be inclined to do this as much as possible. God bless you all -- Inquisitor |

105 | Why do i need to love god? | John 3:16 | Inquisitor | 223404
As you have stated, we are to love God but He would much rather that we love Him on a voluntary basis rather than feel a "requirement" to do so. The biggest, most powerful reason we SHOULD love God is so we can go to Heaven. In the beginning as provided by Genesis, mankind had a very special, face-to-face relationship with God. But we lost that special relationship when sin was introduced into the world. Now God has sent His Son to fulfill a promise God made after closing down that Garden of Eden. He provided the ONLY Way for any human being to go to Heaven and that is done by obeying God's Commandments or His Son's Last Will and Testament which was executed by the Holy Spirit through His Apostles. Again we find ourselves loving God as described in 1 John BUT we MUST also love our fellow man in obedience to God. If we don't love our fellow man and claim to love God, He calls such a person a liar. So you see this loving of God most probably comes upon us in a gradual sort of way, like refining of silver. That process takes a lot of heat and much patience as depicted in Isaiah 48:10 Behold, I have refined you, but not as silver; I have tested you in the furnace of affliction. As you grow in maturity and experience, you will realize the value of these words far more than you do at this moment. BTW, welcome to the Forum. It's so refreshing to see such a young person come to the Forum in this way. Praise the Lord and God bless you. Inquisitor |

106 | what is the correct mode of baptism? | NT general | Inquisitor | 223378
Here's some history from Wikapedia: In Christianity, baptism (from Greek baptizo: "immersing", "performing ablutions", i.e., "ritual washing") is the ritual act, with the use of water, by which a person is admitted to membership of the Church. Jesus himself was baptized. The usual form of baptism among the earliest Christians was for the candidate (or "baptizand") to be immersed totally or partially. While John the Baptist's use of a deep river for his baptism suggests immersion, pictorial and archaeological evidence of Christian baptism from the 3rd century onward indicates that the normal form was to have the candidate stand in water while water was poured over the upper body. Other common forms of baptism now in use include pouring water three times on the forehead. Baptism was seen as in some sense necessary for salvation, until Huldrych Zwingli in the sixteenth century denied its necessity. Martyrdom was identified early in Church history as "baptism by blood", enabling martyrs who had not been baptized by water to be saved. Later, the Catholic Church identified a baptism of desire, by which those preparing for baptism who die before actually receiving the sacrament are considered saved. Some Christians, particularly Quakers and the Salvation Army, do not see baptism as necessary, nor do they practice the rite. Among those that do, differences can be found in the manner and mode of baptizing and in the understanding of the significance of the rite. Most Christians baptize "in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit" (following the Great Commission), but some baptize in Jesus' name only. Most Christians baptize infants; many others hold that only believer’s baptism is true baptism. Some insist on submersion or at least partial immersion of the person who is baptized, others consider that any form of washing by water, as long as the water flows on the head, is sufficient. End of Quote. I have to emphasize that I (along with many other christians) follow the original meaning of baptism and imitate the full immersion of a person's body into the body of water, just like ALL the examples in our Bibles. 108 | Define the triune being. | 1 Thess 5:23 | Inquisitor | 223362
I'll take a shot at these questions but I must admit, I don't think they'll do justice in accordance with God's Word. All I can think of is the fact that we do have three distinct areas of our being as mentioned by Jesus Himself in Mark 12:30 And you shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ This is the first commandment. Now I said three distinct areas in contrast to the four above but that's because most consider the heart of a man to be his mind. But these 3 distinct areas of a human being doesn't even come close to the triune nature of the Godhead. That's why I'm not associating the word with us humans. In my mind it's simply NOT done as it would be disrespectful but that's my opinion. We as Bible students need to remember our body is merely a temporary arrangement as depicted by Paul in 2 Cor 5:1 For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed with our habitation which is from heaven, 3 if indeed, having been clothed, we shall not be found naked. 4 For we who are in this tent groan, being burdened, not because we want to be unclothed, but further clothed, that mortality may be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who has prepared us for this very thing is God, who also has given us the Spirit as a guarantee. 6 So we are always confident, knowing that while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord. 7 For we walk by faith, not by sight. 8 We are confident, yes, well pleased rather to be absent from the body and to be present with the Lord. Further, we're also told that God created us in THEIR Image. What qualities do we share with the Godhead? Apparently, we have to assume that is our spirit and soul which will live on forever after the destruction of this world in the hereafter. It's our choice as to whether we live with God forever or die forever with Satan and his demons. Well as indicated, I have reached the end of my paultry knowledge on this subject so I'll let someone else give their response to this great question. |

109 | I am sick of love? | 1 Kin 11:1 | Inquisitor | 223358
I can only imagine Solomon probably wrote this Book, Song of Solomon AFTER he received this indictment from His Lord, see below. You remember of course, how Solomon acquired so much wisdom and riches. If not, you need to read the whole of 1 Kings. To go from such a lofty place in God's sight to such a low place had to have made him very, VERY sick indeed. 1 Kg 11:1 But King Solomon loved many foreign women, as well as the daughter of Pharaoh: women of the Moabites, Ammonites, Edomites, Sidonians, and Hittites— 2 from the nations of whom the LORD had said to the children of Israel, “You shall not intermarry with them, nor they with you. Surely they will turn away your hearts after their gods.” Solomon clung to these in love. 3 And he had seven hundred wives, princesses, and three hundred concubines; and his wives turned away his heart. 4 For it was so, when Solomon was old, that his wives turned his heart after other gods; and his heart was not loyal to the LORD his God, as was the heart of his father David. 5 For Solomon went after Ashtoreth the goddess of the Sidonians, and after Milcom the abomination of the Ammonites. 6 Solomon did evil in the sight of the LORD, and did not fully follow the LORD, as did his father David. 7 Then Solomon built a high place for Chemosh the abomination of Moab, on the hill that is east of Jerusalem, and for Molech the abomination of the people of Ammon. 8 And he did likewise for all his foreign wives, who burned incense and sacrificed to their gods. 9 So the LORD became angry with Solomon, because his heart had turned from the LORD God of Israel, who had appeared to him twice, 10 and had commanded him concerning this thing, that he should not go after other gods; but he did not keep what the LORD had commanded. 11 Therefore the LORD said to Solomon, “Because you have done this, and have not kept My covenant and My statutes, which I have commanded you, I will surely tear the kingdom away from you and give it to your servant. 12 Nevertheless I will not do it in your days, for the sake of your father David; I will tear it out of the hand of your son. 13 However I will not tear away the whole kingdom; I will give one tribe to your son for the sake of My servant David, and for the sake of Jerusalem which I have chosen.” |

111 | What was the purpose of circumcision? | Gen 17:10 | Inquisitor | 223317
As Doc has stated "Why" questions concerning God and His actions are tough to answer. Besides all the good answers you've been given, I can only add one or two more comments. If one studies the history of mankind, one figures out rather quickly that blood has always been a big factor in making covenants between two parties, most of the time between two or more men. (You might remember in the movies about American natives slashing the palms of their hands and then shaking hands.) But when that covenant is between man and God, He outranks any man and He gets to the dictate the Terms and Conditions. Even Moses' wife recognized that his God was a bloody God and she was a Gentile. Ex 4:24 And it came to pass on the way, at the encampment, that the LORD met him and sought to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a sharp stone and cut off the foreskin of her son and cast it at Moses’ feet, and said, “Surely you are a husband of blood to me!” 26 So He let him go. Then she said, “You are a husband of blood!”—because of the circumcision. We need to remember that blood was a very important item to our Lord in all the millions of sacrifices that were offered to Him, looking forward to the Ultimate Sacrifice of His Son on the cross. When this circumcision is performed on a small child, the wound heals quickly and the pain is forgotten. We also must remember as was alluded to earlier Is 55:8 “ For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. 9 “ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, So are My ways higher than your ways, And My thoughts than your thoughts. One more side note: According to modern medical experts, there are many good reasons to circumcise males, i.e. avoiding cancer. AND the ideal time to circumcise is exactly 8 days after childbirth, because of the spike of vitamin K. Another endorsement of the Inspiration of God's Word. |

112 | Who to follow? Jesus or Moses | Matt 5:17 | Inquisitor | 223286
I'd be the last person in the world to minimize the value of the OT as I've mentioned in a previous post. BUT we must NOT confuse our love for the usefulness and the beauty of the OT with the Authority from God's Word. We shouldn't want to argue with God, just follow It. It certainly was NOT my idea to do away with the Authority of the OT; it's God's Word throughout the NT that does that as shown in the previous verses. As you alluded to, IMHO, the most powerful verse is Gal 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 CHRIST HATH REDEEMED US FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the GENTILES THROUGH JESUS CHRIST; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. 19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore THE LAW WAS OUR SCHOOLMASTER TO BRING US UNTO CHRIST, that we might be justified by faith. 25 BUT AFTER THAT FAITH IS COME, WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER A SCHOOLMASTER. 26 FOR YE ARE ALL THE CHILDREN OF GOD BY FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. and Col 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. I don't see how it could have been said any clearer. Although we may appreciate and even give some celebration to our forefathers in defending this country, we DON'T live by the words they spoke. We MUST live by the current laws and words spoken through current laws and requirements in today's world. In the same manner, God REQUIRED certain things to be followed like sacrifices of animals and other Jewish laws in the Law of Moses to be strictly followed. We all know how harshly criticized the Jewish leaders for NOT following God's Laws. But NOW that Jesus has indeed taken that Old Law to the cross with Him and removed its Authority, we no longer have to follow it. The whole Book of Hebrews is dedicated to many main points, but one of the most prominent is the fact that the NT is BETTER than the OT. As a matter of fact, the word "better" is cited in Hebrews 14 times, comparing all the points of the NT that are better than the OT. As I said, I love the OT for its beauty and majesty but it's like admiring it in a museum. Its Glory Days have come and gone. Now this dispensation belongs to Christ as cited in Col 1:18 And HE IS THE HEAD OF THE BODY, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things HE MAY HAVE THE PREEMINENCE. Note: All the captilized writing above is mine for emphasis. |

113 | In the Name of the Lord (Authority) | Matt 5:17 | Inquisitor | 223281
Quoted from Azure: I agree that Christians do not observe the Sabbath as the Isrealite did in the OT. However, since Jesus Christ came, the Sabbath has been viewed anew. I realize that there's been a group of people observing the Sabbath but under what authority? Why do they NOT continue the whole Law of Moses including animal sacrifices and all the other 600 plus laws of the OT? Like Paul says, you cannot just simply choose to observe only a part of it and hope to please God. One should always be anxious to please God by worshiping Him with His blessing as mentioned in Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. and 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. |

114 | SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH | Matt 5:17 | Inquisitor | 223259
Your Item 1 "designed to guide us?" Yes, I like to think the whole of the OT is to guide us as reflected in Gal 3:21Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Your Item 2, "used as a basis to judge us?" No, I'm afraid not. The Words of Jesus and His appointed representatives, the Apostles will be used to judge us. The OT no longer has the authority over us as It did over the Jewish nation. See scriptures below. John 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. Colossians 1:18 And he [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. We must understand that the NT (Christianity) is superior to the OT (Law of Moses) just as reflected throughout the Book of Hebrews. Now that doesn't mean we should do away or dismiss the OT. It's still an incredibly valuable Book as it illustrates the Love and Justice of Almighty God. Where else would one go for the story of the Creation? Where would we go for all that history and all of what it teaches about God's people in the previous dispensation? It's just that the OT no longer has the authority to rule over us as God's children. Who among us offers sacrifices for our sins? They're not needed as we have the perfect Sacrifice, Jesus as reflected again in Hebrews. We're not able to enjoy multiple spouses or dismiss them easily with a "writ of divorce." And finally ONLY in Christ can we all enjoy true freedom from sin. Guide us? Absolutely. The only single one of the 10 Commandments NOT endorsed in Christianity is the sanctity of the Sabbath as it was strictly part of the previous regime. But the other 9 commandments were issued as basic Godly principles for all mankind to live throughout all time. One might say this seems in contradiction to the basic premise of our "unchanging" God but we need to understand God doesn't change but we humans do. Remember our thoughts are not like God's thoughts as reflected in Isaiah 55:8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. 1 Cor 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” 20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.” Finally we must remember, it was God Himself who gave His Son and the resulting Christianity this "preeminence" mentioned above. |

Also, IF you don't get the kind of response for which you're looking, here's a few more verses that would apply. Acts 18:24 Now a certain Jew named Apollos, born at Alexandria, an eloquent man and mighty in the Scriptures, came to Ephesus. 25 This man had been instructed in the way of the Lord; and being fervent in spirit, he spoke and taught accurately the things of the Lord, though he knew only the baptism of John. 26 So he began to speak boldly in the synagogue. When Aquila and Priscilla heard him, they took him aside and explained to him the way of God more accurately. 27 And when he desired to cross to Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting the disciples to receive him; and when he arrived, he greatly helped those who had believed through grace; 28 for he vigorously refuted the Jews publicly, showing from the Scriptures that Jesus is the Christ. I would think that should be enough but upon his continued rejecting your loving advice, I can only refer you to Matt 18:15 “Moreover if your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault between you and him alone. If he hears you, you have gained your brother. 16 But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ 17 And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector. |

Upon reading Proverbs and the other Books of Wisdom, one must allow the author what we call "poetic license." To "buy truth" simply means to do whatever it takes to acquire it. In this case, read and STUDY the Word of God. Many people read God's Word and get very little from it. One must compare difficult verses to other verses in the Bible on the same subject for the Bible truly is Its own best Commentary. One might refer to the age-old story about the young person approaching the virtuoso pianist and say to him, "I'd give anything to play the piano like you just did." His reply, "That's exactly what it will cost you as I did give up everything else in my life so I could play a piano like that." All of us want what the Bible promises, that is peace and contentment in our lives but so few in the world are willing to pay the price and study the whole Bible to find out the answer God has provided for us. The Bible remains the single most popular Book of all time but so few of us really study it adequately. Psalm 119:97 Oh, how I love Your law!It is my meditation all the day. Luke 10:27 So he [Jesus] answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” BTW, I hope you all know I'm also preaching to myself here. |

118 | Did the Romans kill Jesus or did the Jew | NT general | Inquisitor | 223204
There are some wonderful songs in our various songbooks that quote scripture and then ask some very powerful questions regarding this subject. One of my most favorite Invitation Songs is "Shall I Crucify my Savior?" All these songs paint a very strong picture and puts us right in the middle of that scene and reminds us, that we all as you say killed Christ with our very hands. As God sees it, we crucify our Saviour again whenever we willfully choose to sin. We need to see sin in our lives the same way as He sees it. We might come a little closer when we think of the old story of one of our children being given to the world because his/her blood is the only cure for some dreaded disease. (This story makes the rounds through the E-Mail circuit every once in a while and is VERY powerful.) But think about it, substitute Christ with one of your very own children and then think of someone turning away from his life-giving blood with disdain and disgust. You wouldn't really care who actually killed him/her or actually took the blood out of his body. Our God is Spiritual and isn't really interested in who the actual guilty party that put His Son on that cross. Remember, ALL of us put Him up there each time we take the easy way out and NOT do that good thing that we know we should be doing to "one of the least of His." James 4:17 Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. and Rom 3:23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, I hope this puts a little more of the correct perspective on this subject. All this keeps me humble. |

I liked Beja's answer but I would caution you with a couple of ideas. In such difficult situations as you're describing here, I would suggest that you host such a person with a partner, preferably your spouse. In my mind, there's nothing stronger on this earth than a couple united with God in their marriage AND this would set before them a perfect example of what God's ideal union is all about. Second thing I would say is that God reserves a special blessing for those who have a heart like He does for the sinful and misguided of this world. IF your friend is truly open minded to His Truth and can be converted, then you'll be a very special person in God's Family. BUT I would also say IF this friend of yours is bent on persisting in their lifestyle, then you must see through their veneer and treat them accordingly. Like Beja mentioned, you should mark them as being willfully disobedient and avoid them. BUT that doesn't mean we should stop praying for them; as a matter of fact, make sure they know we (all of God's family) are indeed praying for them. |

120 | i am the resurrection what does he mean | John 11:25 | Inquisitor | 222996
Doc's message is also supported by other writers such as 1 Pet 1:3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, 5 who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. There are several other writers on this subject such as Paul and Luke but they all say the same think, in my opinion. They all support the idea that Christ counts for everything in this area. He is our only Hope, our only Lord, and our only Faith. Like Paul says, IF the Lord's resurrection were absolutely disproven, we above all men are most miserable. (I forget the verse and could not find it.) |
