Beja and Searcher, It looks like I'm not going to get much more response so here goes... Once again, I was going for a more far-reaching and powerful point from our God. I see this story as emphasizing just to whom should we as christians listen. So many times in mankind's history, a person such as Charles Russell or Joseph Smith comes on the scene and claims to be a man of God. But he teaches alien concepts in contrast to God's Word. We as christians MUST compare what we hear from our fellow man to God's Word. Our best example is from the Bereans in Acts 17:10 Then the brethren immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews. 11 These were more fair-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so. Notice they were listening to the great and noble Paul himself but that didn't cut no great stuff with them. They went to their scriptures to check and match his words with God's Word. We must never think we can take a man's word when it's in contrast with His Word. 1 Kings 13 makes that very clear along with Paul's words in Gal 1:8 But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. God's MUST always outrank anyone else when it comes to a contrast between two or more different sets of words. We must never let ourselves be swayed by the smooth and swave words of an experienced orator. We see more warnings in 2 Tim 4:1 I charge you therefore before God and the Lord Jesus Christ, who will judge the living and the dead at His appearing and His kingdom: 2 Preach the word! Be ready in season and out of season. Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching. 3 For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine, but according to their own desires, because they have itching ears, they will heap up for themselves teachers; 4 and they will turn their ears away from the truth, and be turned aside to fables. 5 But you be watchful in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. We must take these words as directed from Paul to Timothy as though they were written to all of us. We must be on guard against those who have deceived themselves and then become very powerful in their speaking the perverted Words from God. Tell me what you think and God bless, Inquisitor |

Searcher, I'm not certain as to how I could improve on the clarity of my post but I'll try. Quoted from my original: What can we learn from this very unusual story from God? What would you say is the most important point for us to apply to our lives? Quoted from my last post: God's MUST always outrank anyone else when it comes to a contrast between two or more different sets of words. We're all on this Forum studying God's Word and bringing to the Forum the fruit of that study. Of course this involves Prov 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, So a man sharpens the countenance of his friend. 18 Whoever keeps the fig tree will eat its fruit; So he who waits on his master will be honored. 19 As in water face reflects face, So a man’s heart reveals the man. Sooner or later, each of us reveals our deepest and inner most thoughts on God's Word. Sure we all have our strengths and weaknesses. Hopefully, we're obeying God's commands and trying to maximize those strengths and minimize those weaknesses. Did you have some specific point you're were trying to say in response to my post? In a further attempt to answer your question, I can only encourage you to re-read my whole post again. Do you not agree that we must be on our guard when we see and hear words from our fellow man? Our God is looking for us to give His Word the respect He's due and study everything we encounter in the "religious world." We already know through Paul's prophecy that there will be many, many false teachers from his time to our present and on through the very last day. And the biggest difficulty (in my humble opinion) is the fact they have deceived themselves so effectively that they sound powerful and persuasive. Thus we who are sharpening each other must preach against these false views and concepts. I hope this helps. God bless you, Inquisitor |

If I gave that kind of impression, it's a great big mistake on my part. We CANNOT, we MUST NOT come up with imagination on the guidance as God gave in the NT. NO, NO, NO. Instead we must follow His Sacred Patterns such as the Day of Worship on Sunday, the first day of the week. Also we must imitate and follow the examples of the simple style of the elements of worship. I agree with you entirely. I meant for this discussion to be centered on the fact that we must inspect each other as you have done with me and make certain our words compliment with God's Word. This man of God in 1 Kings 13 (second in sequence) misrepresented God to the other man of God (first one) and he paid for it with his life. So we must see ourselves as vessels (messagers if you will) through which God's Light shines with His Words of salvation and His Son's body, the church. The imagination as mentioned in my post was merely an attempt to help visualize the confrontation between Paul and Peter. Again I agree with you, we MUST NEVER allow this kind of imagination to add to or take away from God's Word. And I would be the last person in the world to designate me as a teacher on this Forum. I hope this clarifies my position on this matter and God bless. Inquisitor |

Luke 24:1 Now on the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they, and certain other women with them, came to the tomb bringing the spices which they had prepared. 2 But they found the stone rolled away from the tomb. 3 Then they went in and did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. 4 And it happened, as they were greatly perplexed about this, that behold, two men stood by them in shining garments. 5 Then, as they were afraid and bowed their faces to the earth, they said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? 6 He is not here, but is risen! Remember how He spoke to you when He was still in Galilee, 7 saying, ‘The Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.’” 8 And they remembered His words. 9 Then they returned from the tomb and told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Acts 20:7 Now on the first day of the week, when the disciples came together to break bread, Paul, ready to depart the next day, spoke to them and continued his message until midnight. 1 Cor 16: 1 Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I have given orders to the churches of Galatia, so you must do also: 2 On the first day of the week let each one of you lay something aside, storing up as he may prosper, that there be no collections when I come. Now we can easily see why the first day of the week is so important to the first century christians as the Lord rose on that day just as He predicted in accordance with the OT prophecies. Then we see fulfillment of that guidance in the NT with obvious emphasis on the first day of the week in stark contrast to the Sabbath. On the subject of Patterns from our Lord: Phil 3:17 Brethren, join in following my example, and note those who so walk, as you have us for a pattern. 1 Tim 1:16 However, for this reason I obtained mercy, that in me first Jesus Christ might show all longsuffering, as a pattern to those who are going to believe on Him for everlasting life. 2 Tim 1:13 Hold fast the pattern of sound words which you have heard from me, in faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Tit 2:6 Likewise, exhort the young men to be sober-minded, 7 in all things showing yourself to be a pattern of good works; in doctrine showing integrity, reverence, incorruptibility, 8 sound speech that cannot be condemned, that one who is an opponent may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you. Heb 8:5 who serve the copy and shadow of the heavenly things, as Moses was divinely instructed when he was about to make the tabernacle. For He said, “See that you make all things according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. One of the main themes we can see throughout both the OT and the NT is the fact that God has ALWAYS given mankind and His children guidance of one kind or another. For the ark, He gave Noah tremendous detail as He did for the Temple to David and Solomon. We all know about the tedious details (over 600 rules and regulations) God gave with the Law of Moses. BUT in stark contrast with the OT, the NT has minimal details, specific instructions and most of those from the Apostles who were commissioned to represent Christ in the first century, see below*. The decisions they made, i.e. Acts 15 with the blessing of the HS is most powerful. They issued a letter with only 4 restrictions, minimal details in contrast to the OT but of course they MUST be followed. *The Great Commission Matt 28:16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. Yes the title of this paragraph, "The Great Commission" is not part of the actual Biblical text but the message is clear. The Lord commissioned these men to represent Him to the world. Check the vast majority of commentaries and you'll see agreement on this concept. The bottom line is that Yes indeed there are Patterns in the NT to guide the Lord's church in this dispensation, the Christian age. I hope this helps in clarifying and God bless, Inquisitor |

In my mind the best answer comes from the Lord Himself with His Parable on the Good Samaritan. It's instructive to read the background or what motivated Him to expound with the Parable. Lk 10:25 And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested Him, saying, “Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?” 26 He said to him, “What is written in the law? What is your reading of it?” 27 So he answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” 28 And He said to him, “You have answered rightly; do this and you will live.” 29 But he, wanting to justify himself, said to Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?” 30 Then Jesus answered and said: “A certain man went down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell among thieves, who stripped him of his clothing, wounded him, and departed, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a certain priest came down that road. And when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 Likewise a Levite, when he arrived at the place, came and looked, and passed by on the other side. 33 But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was. And when he saw him, he had compassion. 34 So he went to him and bandaged his wounds, pouring on oil and wine; and he set him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 On the next day, when he departed, he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said to him, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, when I come again, I will repay you.’ 36 So which of these three do you think was neighbor to him who fell among the thieves?” 37 And he said, “He who showed mercy on him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and do likewise.” Whenever and wherever we see our fellow man in need, we should feel motivated to share with him whatever we have. Otherwise how could we obey and fulfill these two Commands above from our Lord. Clearly the priest and the Levite didn't have love in their hearts and chose to disobey God's Commands. Tell me what you think? And God bless, Inquisitor |

Upon reading Proverbs and the other Books of Wisdom, one must allow the author what we call "poetic license." To "buy truth" simply means to do whatever it takes to acquire it. In this case, read and STUDY the Word of God. Many people read God's Word and get very little from it. One must compare difficult verses to other verses in the Bible on the same subject for the Bible truly is Its own best Commentary. One might refer to the age-old story about the young person approaching the virtuoso pianist and say to him, "I'd give anything to play the piano like you just did." His reply, "That's exactly what it will cost you as I did give up everything else in my life so I could play a piano like that." All of us want what the Bible promises, that is peace and contentment in our lives but so few in the world are willing to pay the price and study the whole Bible to find out the answer God has provided for us. The Bible remains the single most popular Book of all time but so few of us really study it adequately. Psalm 119:97 Oh, how I love Your law!It is my meditation all the day. Luke 10:27 So he [Jesus] answered and said, “ ‘You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,’ and ‘your neighbor as yourself.’” BTW, I hope you all know I'm also preaching to myself here. |

I'm in agreement with Lionheart. There are about 330 plus prophecies in the OT that are fulfilled with the birth, life, death, burial and resurrection of our Lord. The Thompson Chain Reference Bile has a listing in the back with its Helps. The following is just one of many such websites on this subject, http://www.bibleprobe.com/over-300-prophecies.pdf This is just one of the multitude of reasons why the Bible really is what it claims to be: the actual God-breathed Word from the Creator of this whole universe and that in just six 24-hour days. |

From 2 Chron 36:22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia, that the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah might be fulfilled, the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he made a proclamation throughout all his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying, 23 Thus says Cyrus king of Persia: All the kingdoms of the earth the LORD God of heaven has given me. 75 | Can a congragent hear form God ? | Jer 33:3 | Inquisitor | 222995
I'm thinking the Hebrews writer discussed this subject quite a bit, such as Heb 4:14 Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. 15 For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin. 16 Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need. The main theme throughout this Book is the idea that Christianity is better that the Law of Moses. As a matter of fact the word "better" is used at least 14 times. We have better promises, a better High Priest, a better body (being the church itself.) Hebrews 8:6 But now He has obtained a more excellent ministry, inasmuch as He is also Mediator of a better covenant, which was established on better promises. The bottom line on your question is the fact with Christ, we can approach Almighty God just as a person can approach a judge in court IF you've got a qualified lawyer who acts as a mediator like our High Priest does for us, God's children. |

77 | Why does God call Ezekiel "son of man"? | Ezek 1:3 | Inquisitor | 222994
Upon using the Gateway website, I did find several verses as you say with this phrase, Son of Man. But of course, I prefer the New King James Version. I also notice Isaiah does the same thing in a few of his verses like Isaiah 56:2 "Blessed is the man who does this, And the son of man who lays hold on it; Who keeps from defiling the Sabbath, And keeps his hand from doing any evil.” If one studies these chapters carefully, you will notice they usually start with something like "Thus saith the Lord." Also, large portions of these scriptures have quotation marks around them, suggesting they (Isaiah and Ezekiel are quoting the Lord. I'm thinking this is accepted by most Bible scholars. Who else could possibly chew out the Israelite nation so harshly and the writings both seem to project the future. This technique is used quite a bit both in old and new literature. It makes the book come alive if the reader can visualize he is actually listening to the person orignating the message, in this case the Lord Himself. I for one have to agree with the scholars as these writers were trying desparately to warn Israel of her pending doom. |

78 | SEARCHING FOR THE TRUTH | Matt 5:17 | Inquisitor | 223259
Your Item 1 "designed to guide us?" Yes, I like to think the whole of the OT is to guide us as reflected in Gal 3:21Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 25But after that faith is come, we are no longer under a schoolmaster. 26For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus. 27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. Your Item 2, "used as a basis to judge us?" No, I'm afraid not. The Words of Jesus and His appointed representatives, the Apostles will be used to judge us. The OT no longer has the authority over us as It did over the Jewish nation. See scriptures below. John 12:48 He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him—the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day. Colossians 1:18 And he [Jesus] is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence. We must understand that the NT (Christianity) is superior to the OT (Law of Moses) just as reflected throughout the Book of Hebrews. Now that doesn't mean we should do away or dismiss the OT. It's still an incredibly valuable Book as it illustrates the Love and Justice of Almighty God. Where else would one go for the story of the Creation? Where would we go for all that history and all of what it teaches about God's people in the previous dispensation? It's just that the OT no longer has the authority to rule over us as God's children. Who among us offers sacrifices for our sins? They're not needed as we have the perfect Sacrifice, Jesus as reflected again in Hebrews. We're not able to enjoy multiple spouses or dismiss them easily with a "writ of divorce." And finally ONLY in Christ can we all enjoy true freedom from sin. Guide us? Absolutely. The only single one of the 10 Commandments NOT endorsed in Christianity is the sanctity of the Sabbath as it was strictly part of the previous regime. But the other 9 commandments were issued as basic Godly principles for all mankind to live throughout all time. One might say this seems in contradiction to the basic premise of our "unchanging" God but we need to understand God doesn't change but we humans do. Remember our thoughts are not like God's thoughts as reflected in Isaiah 55:8 “For My thoughts are not your thoughts, Nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. 1 Cor 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: “ I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, And bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent.” 20 Where is the wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the disputer of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For since, in the wisdom of God, the world through wisdom did not know God, it pleased God through the foolishness of the message preached to save those who believe. 22 For Jews request a sign, and Greeks seek after wisdom; 23 but we preach Christ crucified, to the Jews a stumbling block and to the Greeks foolishness, 24 but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For you see your calling, brethren, that not many wise according to the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called. 27 But God has chosen the foolish things of the world to put to shame the wise, and God has chosen the weak things of the world to put to shame the things which are mighty; 28 and the base things of the world and the things which are despised God has chosen, and the things which are not, to bring to nothing the things that are, 29 that no flesh should glory in His presence. 30 But of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God—and righteousness and sanctification and redemption— 31 that, as it is written, “He who glories, let him glory in the LORD.” Finally we must remember, it was God Himself who gave His Son and the resulting Christianity this "preeminence" mentioned above. |

79 | In the Name of the Lord (Authority) | Matt 5:17 | Inquisitor | 223281
Quoted from Azure: I agree that Christians do not observe the Sabbath as the Isrealite did in the OT. However, since Jesus Christ came, the Sabbath has been viewed anew. I realize that there's been a group of people observing the Sabbath but under what authority? Why do they NOT continue the whole Law of Moses including animal sacrifices and all the other 600 plus laws of the OT? Like Paul says, you cannot just simply choose to observe only a part of it and hope to please God. One should always be anxious to please God by worshiping Him with His blessing as mentioned in Colossians 3:17 And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. and 1 Corinthians 1:10 Now I plead with you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that you all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions among you, but that you be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment. |

80 | Who to follow? Jesus or Moses | Matt 5:17 | Inquisitor | 223286
I'd be the last person in the world to minimize the value of the OT as I've mentioned in a previous post. BUT we must NOT confuse our love for the usefulness and the beauty of the OT with the Authority from God's Word. We shouldn't want to argue with God, just follow It. It certainly was NOT my idea to do away with the Authority of the OT; it's God's Word throughout the NT that does that as shown in the previous verses. As you alluded to, IMHO, the most powerful verse is Gal 3:11 But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. 12 And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. 13 CHRIST HATH REDEEMED US FROM THE CURSE OF THE LAW, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: 14 That the blessing of Abraham might come on the GENTILES THROUGH JESUS CHRIST; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. 15 Brethren, I speak after the manner of men; Though it be but a man's covenant, yet if it be confirmed, no man disannulleth, or addeth thereto. 16 Now to Abraham and his seed were the promises made. He saith not, And to seeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy seed, which is Christ. 17 And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. 18 For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. 19 Wherefore then serveth the law? It was added because of transgressions, till the seed should come to whom the promise was made; and it was ordained by angels in the hand of a mediator. 20 Now a mediator is not a mediator of one, but God is one. 21 Is the law then against the promises of God? God forbid: for if there had been a law given which could have given life, verily righteousness should have been by the law. 22 But the scripture hath concluded all under sin, that the promise by faith of Jesus Christ might be given to them that believe. 23 But before faith came, we were kept under the law, shut up unto the faith which should afterwards be revealed. 24 Wherefore THE LAW WAS OUR SCHOOLMASTER TO BRING US UNTO CHRIST, that we might be justified by faith. 25 BUT AFTER THAT FAITH IS COME, WE ARE NO LONGER UNDER A SCHOOLMASTER. 26 FOR YE ARE ALL THE CHILDREN OF GOD BY FAITH IN CHRIST JESUS. 27 For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ. and Col 2:11 In Him you were also circumcised with the circumcision made without hands, by putting off the body of the sins of the flesh, by the circumcision of Christ, 12 buried with Him in baptism, in which you also were raised with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead. 13 And you, being dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He has made alive together with Him, having forgiven you all trespasses, 14 having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having disarmed principalities and powers, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them in it. I don't see how it could have been said any clearer. Although we may appreciate and even give some celebration to our forefathers in defending this country, we DON'T live by the words they spoke. We MUST live by the current laws and words spoken through current laws and requirements in today's world. In the same manner, God REQUIRED certain things to be followed like sacrifices of animals and other Jewish laws in the Law of Moses to be strictly followed. We all know how harshly criticized the Jewish leaders for NOT following God's Laws. But NOW that Jesus has indeed taken that Old Law to the cross with Him and removed its Authority, we no longer have to follow it. The whole Book of Hebrews is dedicated to many main points, but one of the most prominent is the fact that the NT is BETTER than the OT. As a matter of fact, the word "better" is cited in Hebrews 14 times, comparing all the points of the NT that are better than the OT. As I said, I love the OT for its beauty and majesty but it's like admiring it in a museum. Its Glory Days have come and gone. Now this dispensation belongs to Christ as cited in Col 1:18 And HE IS THE HEAD OF THE BODY, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things HE MAY HAVE THE PREEMINENCE. Note: All the captilized writing above is mine for emphasis. |
